I don’t know much about timing. But I had to take the front cover of water pump off to get to a broken bolt. I put marks on the old harmonic balance position. The fiero store sells harmonic balancer that is not set to factory

The balancer was likely from another GM 2.8/3.4 V6 with the timing groove in a different location because the timing cover had the timing tab in a different location.
What was wrong with your old balancer? Did the outer ring slip?
Of not, then the two balancers should have been lined up with their keyways. The location of the timing groove from the old balancer should have been marked on the new balancer and a new groove cut. Then install the new balancer on the engine.

I missed it up slightly while taking it off to access the broken bolt. Keys still match up. It just confused me on the fiero store because they said it does not come with factory set timing. Maybe they said in description if someone tears Engine down

If the keyway slot and timing groove match up in same place on the new balancer, you are good to go.
Put a thin smear of RTV on the key. Oil can creep through the keyway slot otherwise.

From what you describe, your timing has not been altered...BUT the new harmonic balancer has the timing groove in the incorrect position, so of you did need to adjust timing at some point your reference on the new harmonic balancer will be in the incorrect location.
Assuming the old harmonic balancer has not slipped then you can just transfer the timing mark from old to new as fierosound said. If you no longer have the old one, all is not lost there are other methods.

From Here... "Balanced GM replacement dampner (harmonic balancer). Timing marks are not in the same location as the factory unit. Must mark in the correct timing mark from your original dampner."
It's what fierosound said.
[EDIT].... and what PK added while I was posting.[This message has been edited by Patrick (edited 02-07-2020).]

Oh k I understand now I’ll keep the old one as reference if timing goes bad. Pontiac runs good, I’m doing a 4spd to 5spd getrag and doing maintenance
