I'm currently in the process of a front suspension refresh. I removed the passenger-side boot from the rack. The bushing is the stock white plastic piece. I had no looseness with the tie rod. The bushing is perfectly secured in the rack. But using my finger, I can spin it completely around inside of the rack. Is that normal? Or cause for replacement?

While you are that far into it, you might as well replace it with Rodney Dickman's metal bushing.

That was my thought also. Already ordered the bushing, mount bushings, and bearing. Will probably need new rack mount nuts and bolts also. I was just curious if the bushing is actually bad, as the shop I initially took it to, told me the rack was bad. After digging into it myself, I think they were trying to rip me off.

How many miles are on the car? Is there still lube in the rack?

167,000 miles... No clue if there is lube in the rack. How do I check that? I have no Fiero experience other than what I've done so far. And that has basicly just been parts removal.

Do the bushing. It's very easy to do, even with the rack still in the car. Install new inner and outer tie rods as well at the same time (from Rodney) so that you don't have to worry about them for a long, long time. Gotta get an alignment anyways...
If your inner tie rod boots are still in good shape then the internal grease should still be good. I rebuilt my rack completely (new ball and roller bearing on the input shaft as well) about two years ago now when I did my suspension overhaul and the grease deep in there was still in ok shape honestly... Also around 160k miles.------------------ "Discord" Red 1988 GT under restoration!
