Brake issues (Page 1/1)
Fire hazard SEP 30, 10:40 PM
So I finally got my 2.8 engine complete (finally!). I took it out for a test drive and the engine ran great however I had little to no brakes. If I pumped the breaks they would build up pressure and would work but if I just pressed them they went pretty much straight to the floor. When I got home the front brakes smelled and felt hot but the rear breaks weren’t. Does this sound like a brake booster vacuum problem? Or could there be air in the lines or a problem with the master cylinder? I bled the brakes recently and there didn’t seem to be much air in the lines.

You definitely have air in the system. It can be tough to remove. Go to Ogre's Cave (link at top of PFF screen) for best procedure. Of course, you'll still need to figure out why you had air in there...

The reason why I had air in the system is because when I did the engine swap I dropped the subframe so the rear brake lines were just sitting there open.

it doesn't take much.

Likely brakes lost fluid and air got in the MC too.
Or MC or rear calipers are bad.

I was thinking the master cylinder probably has air in it as well. I was more or less looking for reassurance that there wasn’t a problem with the brake booster vacuum line. I haven’t yet bled the master cylinder so I’ll do that when I get home from school this weekend.

Booster will never cause a Soft/Spongy pedal.
Iffy booster or vac line to it would do the exact opposite making harder to very hard pedal.

If you replace a booster for any reason and adjust it wrong can cause Low pedal likely iffy rear caliper(s) often do or Booster can keep MC pushed in often then won't release line pressure keeping brakes "on."

Note that very low pedal like near or on the floor is often a bad MC. Most Seals in it (3 of 4 just for pistons) can fail w/o leaking. QT valve can fail w/o leaking too. See MC pages in my cave. use map button at top.

Low pedal isn't = to Soft/Spongy pedal because system works right just w/ low pedal.
But low pedal may get "normal" when you "pump" it sim to Soft/Spongy pedal.
