Fuel pump drawing power continuously (Page 1/1) |

Here is the deal: in a stock 2.8 I have an intermittent, and lately more than not, parasitic draw killing my battery. Ignition switch is off of course.
I have narrowed it down to my Fuel pump circuit. In my diligence I tested the relay, it is fine. While having the relay disconnected i decided to check to see if the amp draw was still there. It is at 2.5-2.75 amps. If I pull the fuel pump fuse it goes to 0.037 amps.
So if the relay is disconnected how is there still a draw on fuel pump circuit?
My guess would be power bleed into the circuit from elsewhere, but where would there be a place for this? at the Relay pigtail?
If the battery is not dead then it starts and drives fine. It charges properly. I did just have to replace the very sketchy wiring from the alternator to the power distribution block from previous owner's "repairs".
I did find this on The Ogre's Cave
quote | If the fuel pump continues to run for significantly longer than 3 to 4 seconds after the ignition is shut off, refer to Service Manual Vacuum and Wiring Diagrams/Electronic Fuel Injection/Fuel and Idle Speed Control Wiring Circuit for wiring information and to section 8A of the chassis service manual for information on diagnosis and repair/replacement of the oil pressure sensor switch. |

My pressure gauge is pegged at all times so would this cause this and does this bypass the relay?
The oil pressure gauge worked when i picked up the car but it quit working after I changed the temp sender since the temp gauge didnt work, and still doesnt.... another issue I need to figure out. As you can tell I am having gremlins everywhere. I fix one thing and something else goes.
I did recently post on another thread about this but I figured this could be not the same issue at all so I started this thread. ------------------ "HICCUPP" 1988 2.8 GT Ocelot SS exhaust

Hey, missed your name but, mine did the same thing after fuel sending unit replaced. I unplugged the oil pressure plug and the constant fuel running stopped. I understand that the two sources of power come from the relay and the oil pump sending unit. I assume that the oil press sending unit is bad and causing this fault. Good luck and I have a great evening. Kevin

Kevin, You, good sir, are correct. It was as you said, I unplugged the oil pressure sending unit and the draw went back down to 0.037 amps. I guess I should have tried unplugging this when I read the Ogre's service bulletin. I guess I was trying to over complicate things. So it looks like a new oil pressure sending unit is in my future. Also, like you my name is my user name.
Thank you again, Chuck

You were posting this while I was checking the amp draw from Kevin's suggestion of unplugging the sender to check. Thank you I will go through the TSB and update properly. As always you have a gold mine of information and I should have checked thoroughly before posting.
