1988 5 speed noise like the Jettsons car when taking off? (Page 1/2)
hercimer01 SEP 08, 11:35 PM
I recently changed the oil pan and front trans mount. I had the front engine mount out and the AC bracket too. I lifted the engine up high enough to get the motor mount out of the way of the oil pan removal while the trans mounts were still in place. Could this have damaged the 5 speed. The noise comes from the passenger side and is proportional to the axle rpms. Could it just be a coincidence and maybe the right rear hub crapped out?

Unlikely to have hurt the transaxle. I would check some things such as brake pads, rotor, hub bearing, CV joint for rubbing and wear. Jack up the rear end and put the car in neutral, then manually turn the wheel to see if you can locate the noise.

Most likely passenger side inner tripot if you had the drivetrain elevated off the engine mount.

I'm just freaked out because I did a job for a friend, now its messed up.
This is why I like to work on only my cars. Ugh

I'm going to jack it up and rest it on the lower control arms some how and run it.

88 and V6 OR L4?

88 L4 have a balancer driven by a crank gear that have problems w/ little or no warning before completely fails and often wreck the engine.

check the axle depth in the trans case....maybe it popped out a bit.

I second... or is it third now, on checking the axle sounds like it may need snapped back in.

Sorry, thanks. It's a V6.

Does the V6 have a balancer?

I was at Fierorama and that was the consensus that the axle may have popped out.

Thanks. Will keep posted.
