Very little pressure at clutch pedal (Page 1/2)
Addition1291 SEP 03, 03:40 PM
So when I was driving it yesterday, I had to fight to get it into second gear a couple of times. I thought this was a little odd, so today I bled the clutch.

I had my fiance pushing down the clutch for me and sure enough, we're getting a lot of air out of it. Then as soon as it looks like there's no more air coming out, she reports that there's very little pressure from the clutch.
Not good.

So we're pushing down the clutch, pumping it, no pressure increase. We're still getting fluid from the bleeder valve but there is very little pressure at the pedal. I started the car up and tried to put it into gear but couldn't. The gears just grind and it can't get into gear. There's no fluid dripping from the car anywhere and I can hear the master cylinder move fluid around when we push on it.

Is that a slave cylinder problem? A diaphragm thing? Any ideas?

Best guess is the clutch master cylinder seals are gone.

Or possibly your slave cylinder died? I went though a similar thing and after checking everywhere for leaks I ended up replacing both the master and slave cylinders. Air is also a huge problem I have noticed so I got Rodney Dickman's bleeder tool for the slave cylinder. Worked like a charm!

I also got the master and slave from Rodney Dickman. They are top notch parts! Way better than any aftermarket stuff.

It is usually the slave cylinder. When you get it off the car, take it apart and look in the bore.It will be pitted, allowing air in. The OEM steel clutch lines rust from the inside out, leaving the fluid the colour of mud.

Ok so I was pulling off my master cylinder to replace it and this happened...

Yeah...
Anybody know what size that fitting in there is? I think I can flare the line and put a fitting on if I know what size goes in there.

And yes, you should replace the slave cylinder now as well. The clutch hydraulic system on our cars a notorious weak point. I had to replace the master a week after fitting Rodney's slave.

The Fiero Store sells complete stainless steel clutch lines. No more sludge in the lines, no more problems. It has been I think 5 years since I replaced the line and the slave cylinder. Before that I replaced a slave every summer.

Most people do not realize that the clutch, and the brake fluid must be changed ( bled through Periodically) to new fluid to prevent this from happening. I do the brakes at least every 15k miles...No problems in over 10 years now...Sometimes sooner if I have extra time on my hands...Pay me now, or pay me later. Dot 3 is cheaper than replacing parts, and having system failures...The clutch doesn't hold much fluid, change it sooner...

So while I'm waiting for fittings to arrive in the mail I decided to go ahead and pull off my slave cylinder just to check and it and look what I found...

Slave cylinder bracket was broken. I think my slave is good though. Guess I'm ordering a bracket from the Fiero Store.
