northstar 4t80e solid mounts (Page 1/1)
jab018 SEP 02, 07:56 PM
I am in the early planning stages of a 2m8star swap into a 87 2m4.
I am wondering if anyone has solid mounted a NorthStar. I have
dug through this and other forums and found some great info but
haven't seen this addressed. The NorthStar has an amazingly
smooth idle and the smoothest power delivery of any engine I
have used. I have driven solid mounted engines on chevy trucks
and without noticeable engine vibration intrusion but obviously the
fiero is a more intimate chassis. I am wondering if anyone has
tried and has opinions on the effect on the driving experience. if I
cant find any info I guess I could design mounts around bushing and
install solid inserts to have options.

intended victim: 87 2.5 auto
donor 06-08 dts using donor 4t80 (it appears I can unlock and tune
these year with my hptuners please correct if I am wrong)

please no attempts to talk me out of the NorthStar. I have repaired
and bulletproofed several of them. They are one of my favorite
engines to work on and I am just about to roll 300,000 miles on the
first one I rebuilt 160k miles ago in my 01 Seville sts. The northstar will be pushing
our fiero around.

Welcome to the forum!

The real downside to the solid mounting is the shockloading of the drivetrain parts. This might be less of an issue with the auto.

All my swaps are 4 corner rubber mounted with about 24" between them. The mounts are based on lower control arm bushings and are strictly for the shockloading benefit. There is no visible movement of the drivetrain with throttle blips, but it does move when it needs to.

I've done a 2006 engine/tyranny from a DTS. Solid mounted and smooth as silk. I didn't really do a swap thread but you can see some of the work here

Happy to answer any questions you have

If you push the car hard in corners and deflect the rear frame rails and cradle slightly, with solid mounts you're sending chassis loads through your powertrain.

Thanks for the responses and the welcome!
i have been creeping this forum for a while but finally set up an account
it is an incredible resource!

thanks for the link dave. your install looks awesome and about all the
motivation I need to go solid. I have saved that link and will be referring
back to it as this project progresses.

next step: find a donor car. the 87 is still running great(but underpower) and my gal is using it as her
summer commuter(she gets all the cool toys) so I am hoping to find a
donor car locally that I can mod the subframe from and do mock up
to minimalize down time on hers..
thanks again for the input,
josh

Josh, if I could make one recommendation regarding your proposed swap it would be to see about a more aggressive torque converter. As much as I loved that engine/tranny combo I was a bit chagrined to find that I couldn't spin the tires from a dead stop. All kinds of oomph at higher rpms but down low,not so much.

thanks dave,
I have a local trans guy I will talk to about a looser stall. also thinking
playing with final drive. fuel economy is still a consideration since
my gal will be commuting with it so I cant go to nuts though.

Dave, were you able to start in first gear instead of second?

O/P, the STS used a 3.71 final, the SLS used a 3.08 final in the 4T80. (First generation N* models of the Seville, dont know about the later generations)
