New Clutch Won't Release (Page 1/2)

88 4 Cylinder Base
5 spd Isuzu year unknown (from a junk yard)
New Luk Clutch
New Fiero Store Cast Release Arm
New Clutch Slave Cylinder

I am stumped. I posted a couple weeks ago about my new clutch being very soft. I got everything together enough to start the engine and test it out. The clutch will not release.

I took video of me pushing the clutch pedal with my pole. It was a bit tricky with my phone in the other hand. It looks like normal operation to me. The only thing that seems off is the slot on the clutch fork does not line up with the clutch arm.

What could I have screwed up or might be broken that could cause a brand new clutch not releasing?

If worse come to worse, I have a 4 spd from an 85 GT that I can put on the car. I assume I would use the same clutch.

To save us looking up your original thread... how far (measured carefully, not guessed at) is your slave moving?

I just measured it at 3/4".

Edit: I just noticed that my clutch pedal is lower than my brake pedal. I guess that means I need a new master cylinder.

I looked into the clutch arm/shaft, the shaft has a locating notch that bolt goes through so that isn't the issue. It's almost certainly a hydraulic issue. 3/4 isn't enough travel.

Also, I came across this post:

As you said you changed the clutch arm you should check if the bolt is hitting the transmission case.

I checked the travel before I installed the transmission. The bolt that the Fiero Store sent was about 1/4" too long and was hitting. I ended up using two thick washers on the other end of the bolt to take up the extra length that was hitting.

The new master cylinder is order and will be here Thursday. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.

It usually indicates that either the banjo and/or the clutch pedal is bent.

I'm not sure but I believe by 88 they came with the steel pedals?

Nothing is unbendable.

From Here...

The banjo rod is bent and the master cylinder is leaking.
