Radiator Fan Dead - Possible 12V Motor Replacements? (Page 1/1)
2002z28ssconv MAY 19, 11:26 AM
I'm running low on spare radiator shroud/fan assemblies. I have a couple with dead motors now. Has anyone ever found a motor that could be swapped into the shroud?

Of so, please share so I don't have to figure it out... and I'll make a tutorial. We gotta save the old parts.

Use a Fiero shroud and install a modern 16" aftermarket fan assembly.
I think Forum member fierosound came up with this upgrade, it works great and looks good too!

I doubt you'll be able to adapt a different motor cheaper than buying a stock replacement, unless you get used parts. Even the cheapest 16" aftermarket fans cost more than $50.

Edit to add:

Advance Auto has the fan motor for about $25 (part #35656) [ LINK ]
Also, the Fiero Store has it for about $50 (part #55106). [ LINK ]

Dead Motors Relay and Switches can be a symptom, not the root cause.
See my Cave, Electric Motors and Wire Service
Often the Rad Fan have crap ground and crap power because red wire have to go thru several connections before get to the relay and relay may be dying too.
And I mean Ground. Fan Ground uses same screw but is Not shared ground w/ HL etc and only connects to frame near left HL assembly. Is a bigger wire then other too.

Add most GM FWD and Fiero Rad Fans was never made to run all the time. Adding switches or shorting out the green control wire can shorten the motor(s) life a lot.
Yes, Fiero AC control head does same but GM didn't care if fan dies after Warranty ran out.

Heater Blower Motor can have a short life when run a max speed too. Both are nearly identical design and made cheap as possible.

If you think aftermarket fan/blower motors are much better... Most of them are same thing hating to be on all the time.

Well there ya go.... Thanks BT (and others). I never even thought that those were on the shelf, store bought items.

Rodney has different temp rated fan switches for the engine, and thermostats. I have a combo from him the allows for minimal fan operation. Check RD's site out for different combinations, and his recommendations. The stock 235 temp sender in these Fiero's is too high.

It's a little more expensive, but you can graft a new Volvo fan onto the Fiero shroud, and have a 2 speed fan if you choose. New, less than $100 on Amazon. Used much cheaper, but you run the risk of a bad motor or cracked fan blade ( I got the cracked fan blade!). This fan really cools, too, if you live in a warm climate.

Amazon has aftermarket fans for as little as $39.99. Free shipping with Prime membership.
The modern fans draw lower amps and move more air than the OEM Fiero fan.

Just got notice yesterday that Rock Auto is having a Wholesale Closeout Sale on Fiero parts, including radiator cooling fans. $9.47 for cars with AC and $17.48 for cars without AC. These are both VDO motors.
