same car, same engine. 1985 4 cyl/auto. I've been having a "Problem" with it for about a month, ("Intermittent" Of course) the car Runs fine, but every, well not every, once in awhile when sitting at a light, it will be idling fine, Then Just Quit ! no stumbling, Nothing. It will always start right up again and be fine.... untill next, time (That could be 5 min or 5 days !) Now My wife is afraid to drive it, so I had to drop the $$ and buy her a Hyundai ! But I still drive it and would like to Find The Problem and Fix it ! al;ready has New TPS, fuel filter, New Bosche injector, 13 psi pressure, new plugs, wires, cap rotor. It's got fuel, got spark, will Always start right up, so WHAT is the problem, only "Quits" for maybe a Second ! light someone turned the key off. HELP ! Thank You ;-)

Electrical contact in or around the ICM. A dirty connector or a solder joint inside the ICM.

ECM can have same problem.
See if you have spark. Yes then see if you have fuel when trying to start.------------------ Dr. Ian Malcolm: Yeah, but your scientists were so preoccupied with whether or not they could, they didn't stop to think if they should. (Jurassic Park)

It "DOES START" each and Every time without hesitation. But it also just "shuts down" for no apparent reason if sitting at a light In Gear. no sputtering from running out of fuel, No missing. However it will always (so far) Restart IMMEDIATELY (without more than a 1/2 revolution) ! Has to be something "electrical "dis- connecting, then when the ign switch is turned, it connects again ! COULD it be the ign Switch itself??

One of our guys had a similar problem and I traced it to the pickup coil. Replaced it and no problems since. Testing is easy and can be done on engine.

If you haven't replaced the pick up coil ever, that is where I would start. One that looks like crap even if it is still working is just waiting to leave you on the side of the road. Most (all?) pick up coils by this time are falling apart.
If that doesn't do it then I would replace the ICM.
If that does not solve the problem, try swapping the ECM. You should be able to pick one up for cheap.
Since it quits, and then can be restarted right away, that to me makes me think this is something electronic, not electrical. An electrical connection would not just go back together immediately. But resetting electronics many times brings them back to life.

Don't guess - TEST the pickup coil with an ohmmeter. ICM could still be flakey. I had some aftermarket ones die in 1 YEAR.[This message has been edited by fierosound (edited 03-04-2018).]

I "MAY" have found my problem. the 2 torx bolts that hold the 2 halves of the throttle body together (not the top), were not quite a Tight as they maybe should have been. we'll see. Thanks
