88 GT Decklid Ground Wire ? (Page 1/2)
Orig88GT-NC MAR 21, 08:46 PM
I'm usually pretty sharp when it come to working on my car , been at it for over 26 years.
But I'm stumped on this one. Maybe somebody else has run into this....

88 GT', rear deck lid, LH Side by the Hinge. Single Wire aprox 12" length, with ring terminals on each end, One end is screwed to the Deck lid ( this is an 88')
I thought this was a ground wire, (ie providing a ground for the latch solenoid)

I have the deck lid off the car for other reasons and thought I would replace the wire because it was looking a little worn. Went to check for ground continuity between the wire and the solenoid case, I had none.
Inspected the screw attach point and all I see is composite material, I thought there was some steel in the deck lid to provide the ground.

Any thoughts.....

There is a ground strap which should be on the right side of the decklid. It is a braided stainless cable that has ring terminals on each end and looks something like this:

There is also a strap on the left side that is a circular cable which is sheathed with plastic and also has ring terminals on each end. That is a travel limiting strap to prevent the decklid from swinging up too far if the tension rods provide too much pressure (like if the deck came with a spoiler from the factory and you removed the spoiler reducing the weight of the decklid).

Well not exactly,
The schematic only shows the solenoid's body grounded.

The troubleshooting Section references' only Ground G201 which is behind the Instrument Panel

The wire on the deck lid, which I haven't been able to find any reference to in the 88 Factory Manual, I would think provides a ground to the deck lid. Otherwise the only other ground source would be through the Deck Lid Hinges( Not a good ground source).
The wire in question appears to only been attached to the lids composite material..

Follow Up

This isn't mine but the wire can be seen in the picture along with the attaching screw.

Is it a small wire? Maybe to the RF shield on the deck lid.

The deck release solenoid is grounded when the latch is closed by the trunk part of the locking system. No ground wire required, and that is why you will never hear it click when the lid is up (maybe the relay, but not the release solenoid).

The wire you are describing looks like the one that is for radio interference. Rather, to reduce the radio interference from the engine ignition system. In 88, 4 Cyl coups had a metal plate there. I am not sure if the GT's did as well, but I do know the 2.5 had it.

The 88 has the RF shielding made into the deck lid, I'm sure that grounds that.

THAT'S IT, THANK YOU BOTH !!!!

Your Right, I completely forgot about that, it explains everything.....
One interesting thing to note is that the 88's don't have a metal plate for RF Shielding. Their decklids were specially made by impregnating the plastic with some type of metal/alloy to "build in" the RF shielding to the plastic. I believe Pontiac won some kind of industry design award for this.

Thanks again for jogging my memory...

My 85 SE has the ground plate installed in the section over the engine. I forgot to reattach the ground wire one time when I removed the deck lid but I couldn't tell any difference in the radio as far as static was concerned.
