it fixed the issue! I actually was right about it being in the wrong spot initially. there's a spring that connects the switch to the mechanism and I had it connected to the edge of the mechanism instead. just need to wait for a new belt of the right size now.

my solution for playing slow is to make a dub of some tapes at a slightly faster speed. B)

can't play my tapes with a Bluetooth radio. besides I don't like the tron look of every Bluetooth radio I've seen.

Install a monsoon radio from a Pontiac Grand Prix. You get a modern am/fm radio with CD. It fits in the space without adaptors, has the right colour back lights, and a 7-band equaliser. Search the Mall and you'll see you can get them with jack to allow you to plug in your phone or media player. I have one in each of my cars.

Yeah, I know and I can appreciate Katie's opinion. It is the proper vintage audio system for a mid-1980's car but after years of carrying a tape box around and listening to tape hiss, the monsoon with a media plug is my preferred system.

Katie, I think I have two in storage in NC. Planning to visit the US in June. I'll check my stores in the barn. Let me know if you don't get it working.
