When I grabbed the first thing I noticed is the way its installed in the Dodge. They hang it from the cross-member and for us it would be the opposite. Like you said, a couple of tabs welded to the Fiero cross-member would work out fine. Nothing is in the way of them, the rack is not thicker than the cross section so having the tabs going up and then boxing in the bottom and either welding them to the cross-member or putting them on a piece of flat steal and then bolting/welding them to the cross-member depending on how it aligns. The steering end is a very similar "D" with the small groove cut for the bolt to squeeze the end, it even used an 11mm bolt, just like the 88 rack. I'll get those measurements when I get a chance.

I autocrossed my Formula for several years, and that's exactly how I felt about the steering ratio.

dont give up on that rack, see if your pick n pull has a volvo with an electric power steering pump, from what i've seen the volvo uses an electric motor to drive the pump, it has a power, ground, and a plug with three wires, you plug the GREY wire into an ignition source and the pump kicks on after 3 seconds of sensing the ignition source, so you can possibly adapt the volvo pump to that rack, if you look on youtube you'll find power steering conversions with the volvo pump. which makes me wonder if a chevette power steering rack would work as well with that pump.

Thanks for sharing, I'll need to add this to my research list! ------------------ "I am not what you so glibly call to be a civilized man. The Fiero has a long rack, between the inner tie rod joints (balls). That makes adding adapters to short racks easier. A short replacement rack could also be centered on the steering shaft axis easier if you could make adapters of the correct length to place the rack in the best position. If the rack is to long, it would be a poor swap choice and if you can't align the steering input shaft properly then it is a poor swap choice. The Fiero rack input shaft also has a shallow angle on it. A replacement rack would be best if it has a similar input shaft angle. The 2.75 ratio is ok, but 2.5 or 2.5 would be better. The F body V6 rack is about 2.75 and it is an improvement over the stock 88 Fiero rack.[This message has been edited by Rickady88GT (edited 03-10-2020).]

The 2013 Challenger is *FRONT* steer, right? That is, the rack is mounted in front of the axle centerline.
Are the mounting bolts in the original chassis vertical, horizontal or at an intermediate angle?

The Camaro is also front steer, as far as I know all of them are. So the hydo assist and the full electric steering racks are very common in the wrecking yards.

Yes, front. Vertical. in the original car, it hangs from the crossmember. I have a few 88's, and have been looking at the 88 crossmember. No idea how it would work for 84-87 cars. I don't think the mechanical "mounting" is going to be a problem, and if the Volvo pump is an easy swap than this could work. I plan on getting some measurements of the rack with the boots off so we can see how wide it is. If its too wide then its all for nothing.

I like the idea of an electric pump but love the idea of an electric rack. My suspicion is that each choice would involve complex computer processing and some sensor inputs. But a pump with a pressure reservoir and a simple pressure switch sounds easy?
