4.9L Swap is Complete and Running (Page 2/2)

Pro Tip -

Put some shop towels on top of trans to catch any spills.
Use a big Ziploc bag and put under and around the filter.
Use a punch and hammer and poke a hole in the lower portion of the filter, catch the oil in the baggie.
Unscrew filter into the baggie, being sure to get the top of the baggie up high enough to catch the oil that spills out of the front (window) side of the angled housing.

What about a oil filter relocation to help not make such a mess?
olejoedad MAY 30, 04:21 PM
That's an option, but not really needed.

Really clean Dennis, nice work man.

Dennis, how is your exhaust routed?

Same as my 3800SC. Uses a U bend from manifold to crossflow Spintech muffler then two right angle pipes out the sides. Used 3" in on the 3800 and 2/12" In on the 4.9L due to the lower manifold outlet and tighter fit. Muffler is in and just need to connect the two exhaust pipes.. We keep the small trunk intact on all the swaps we have done and always retain the trunk heat shield. Cutting the trunk is a no no around here. My wife won't travel with me if she has no room for her clothing and such. Then its still an overnight only.

Hey Dennis that looks really nice. A nearby friend of mine had his 86 GT 5spd converted to the 4.9 by Rockcrawl. After a few years the rear main seal started leaking and he thinks some oil got on the clutch cause it began slipping so it's been parked ever since.

My 3800SC is almost done. I turned the key a few weeks ago and it fired right up and the gas pedal wasn't even connected yet. Talk about satifaction!!!

By the way did you ever figure out what that knocking noise was in your 3800sc??

Nice job. Very clean.

Second olejoedad's suggestion regarding "bagging" the filter before removal. Works fine for me.

I appreciate all of the tips and compliments from all but this swap is nothing special. Been done many times before, its older tech but if it runs great, that's what matters most. In every case, its got to be far better than the 2.8L. Started it up today and ran an OTC pressurized clean of the injectors on the rail. BIG difference in engine smoothness. That engine now purrs like a kitten and idles without vibration as I guess Cadillac engines should.
As for Spoons comments: Can't wait to see your install at Carlisle Charlie. If its anything like your car it should look neat and run super. The first turn of the key is always stressful especially so here when I never heard this engine run. Just trusted the 60K OD in the car and went from there.
Didn't get to fix the engine noise on my 3800SC just yet.The lift was tied up with the 4.9L swap for about 8 months. Tomorrow the 4.9L will be moved out and the 3800SC put on the lift. After giving the engine noise some thought ,I believe it to be an exhaust rattle or leak. The sound raps on all six firings and not intermittently like a collapsed lifter, or rod knock nor sounds like the grinding noise of a main bearing gone bad. We shall know this week as I've got to get this car ready for Carlisle. Will share the results of my findings and just hope that its nothing serious.
