Is it possible to design a bolt-on serpentine belt upgrade for the 84-86? That way we get the tentioner? Also I've noticed that not all pulley configurations are the same. I've seen some that have the double pulley on the water pump and some that don't. I prefer the double pulley as you get redundancy on the water pump if one breaks.

One could look at the V belt engineering in mower deck V belt drives. Many mower decks use V belts that bend backwards and go around idlers. Those V-belts (from what I have seen) have internal cords in the small end of the belt also along with cords in the wide end. ------------------ Rodney Dickman

Those V belts on the mowers last a long long time as well. Really though, good belts and proper tensioning mean no squeaks.

A quick google search revealed V-belt tensioners that don't bent the belt backwards.

Deck belts are usually wrapped with Kelvar or something similar. If a standard belt is used, it will not last long.

I had wondered about the possibility of going that route myself, but with the necessity of changing pulleys on the alternator, balancer, and water pump... and configuring/installing a tensioner, it seemed like way too much trouble!

Ah ha, I knew there must've been something different about those belts!

Interesting. Sometimes it's so easy to overlook a (relatively) simple solution. I guess the argument against using that style of tensioner is that it actually reduces belt wrap around the other pulleys, but it appears that it might still indeed be helpful in reducing belt slippage.[This message has been edited by Patrick (edited 10-10-2015).]

Changing the pulleys on the waterpump, alternator and balancer would be a major PITA, but so was being stranded on I-10 when my V-belt shredded for the third time.

A serpentine belt can still have similar issues. I thought I could hear a slight "ticking" sound coming from the back of my '86 GT, but it didn't sound "serious". This is going back a few years now, and I forget what made me finally check it out, but I discovered that the shredding serpentine belt had eaten thought several wires in the main wiring harness that runs above the water pump pulley and connects to the power junction by the battery. I now investigate any weird sounds a lot more quickly.

No doubt problems can arise with either. I had the belt drill through my battery on my 88 Coupe. It wasn't the belt's fault that the battery shifted into the belt, but any time you have rotating machinery you need to be careful.

Just get some sand paper and sand the pulleys in the groves, IE rough grit, doesn't take much, they usually get worn smooth after all these years, also new belts tend to stretch in the first few days of use, and need re tightened.
I stay away from gator back belts, bought one once shredded in like two days, no warranty, plus costs more, never again. (it was a serpentine not a V just FYI)
