F23 Trans mounts- is anyone making them (Page 1/3)
cam-a-lot APR 20, 08:29 AM
Hello

Is anyone making F23 trans mounts? If I remember correctly, the Thelin mounts are for the Ecotec bellhousing, not the 2000-2002 non ecotec engine/trans combo that bolts on to the 60deg V6 motors?

Planning to replace my Getrag with an F23 with FY1 gearset, so I will be buying 2 transmissions. Need to find trans mounts

I see some nice looking ones on WCF website. Any recent experience with these mounts? Did WCF actually deliver them in time before the customer died of old age?

any advice would be appreciated

You would have to check with Roger but I thought I saw one of his adds that said he has mounts for the non ecotec transmission now too.

Does WCF really have the mounts we need? The ones shown on their website look like Ecotec mounts. And they are NOT cheap!
And not to hijack the thread but, what is everyone having to pay for Cavalier trannies?
Also are there any salvage yards willing to sell just the bell housing?
I'm on the west coast & the cheapest I can find them is around $150 + $50 shipping.

Check with Thelin... last I asked a couple of years ago, everything he had was Ecotec.
His rear transmission mount would work with any F23, but the V6/metric bellhousing is missing two of the holes his front bracket bolts to. The third hole is in the other case-half, so you could bolt his forward bracket on with that one hole, then probably make an adapter bracket to pick up some other holes on the bellhousing.

Also, his shift linkage points too close to the engine to work with the V6 crossover exhaust pipe.

That's pretty dam cheap. I have both the required transmissions, but haven't done the work yet. I wish I'd been able to get mine that cheap.
I would not expect the yard to sell just the bellhousing. You're asking them to take a transmission they maybe could sell for $150, spend an hour of labor splitting the bellhousing, then sell it to you for $50(?)... the remainder of the transmission being useless without the bellhousing and having a scrap value of maybe $5. Not a good deal for them.

Yeah I know but,
#1 manual trannies are not exactly selling like hot cakes anymore
#2 cart parts.com lists over 300 of them
#3 parts & labor replacement costs are most likely more than a twenty year old manual tranny car is worth & even if U did, U already have a bell housing
#4 shipping cost on a whole tranny vs a bell housing is significant
#5 a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush

I'm beating my head against an immovable object here. Even though It's gonna be cheaper to buy two trannies to make one, than have my 282 rebuilt, the wee bit of Scotts blood flowin thru me veins boils at the thought of having to do that. And how to keep from stumbling over that Ecotec/Cavalier tranny when I'm done with it? Sure as hell ain't gonna give it back to the salvage yard! :-( Maybe make a planter out of the bell housing & shove the back half over in a corner some place. :-)
Off my soap box.
Thanks for the reply. Have a nice day.

I have F23 brackets from fieroflyer (he may have stopped making them), fierorog, and thelin. all from the 2000 cavi version
thelin included an extra brace that he recommends gets welded.

they all mount on different points.

After using all 3.. if I ever were to do it again I'd buy a welder, get some classes... and make my own.
It would be worth it in the long run

I'm not knocking their brackets, I just think every car and setup is so custom that I personally had to modify them anyways.

Here's a picture of the same side bracket from each person.

If that is too much to spend on a transmission ...... then modifying a 30 + year old car probably shouldn't be on your "to do" list. That is a steal for a good, working transmission.

WCF's website claims the mounts are for the Metric bellhousing- so this "should" be correct. I guess one issue to think about is whether the engine alignment will work with these mounts, since there are different 3800 engine mounts out there. Mine was from Purple Reign a few years ago... need to check if my motor location will work with these trans mounts

Maybe FieroGuru will come up with a nice design and sell it !!

Bump

Is there anyone here who has actually bought the WCF mounts and brackets and can comment? They look good in the pictures- quite pricey. Would love to get some feedback about quality, fit and also if it took a reasonable amount of time to receive them after payment.

being that you're wanting to do an FY1 set with 60V6 Bell, you're probaby going to have to make your own, as you will end up with mix matched bolt bosses. it's not very hard to make mounts, but it is definitely tedious.

Changing the gear set has an effect on the mounts? I thought that the bellhousing is not affected- so why would the mounts be different just because I change the gearing?
