Questions for Super Duty 4 guys (Page 1/2)

Is everyone with an SD4 running a carb or anyone have a Fuel Injection setup?
I was wondering if one of the 2 TBI setups like on GM 6 cylinder engines would work on the stock computer (either from the Fiero or from the corresponding 6 cyclinder donor vehicle).
If a semi stock setup wouldn't work what about an aftermarket stand alone system like the Holley Avenger EFI? I know thats an expensive way to go, but I'd like to know the pros and cons from someone that's already done it.

Also, what are you guys doing for Alternator, Water Pump and (AIR CONDITIONING) ? Can you basically a stock belt drive configuration, or do have to switch out to something else?

Bump for the weekend guys....

Also in the mean time, I emailed Holley regarding using their ECU to run one of those factory 2 BBL TBI's units from a V6 and just got a smart ass response indicating it be too much CFM for a 151 cu in engine. While I guess this could be true he didn't raise the same concern when I asked if their Avenger EFI would work, and also, here is where I am scratching my head.... I had assumed that since the Super Duty would be making more than twice the horsepower of a stock duke it would need more air/fuel, thus the idea for the TBI from the V6, but since the displacement is still the same or only slightly bigger assuming a 2.7 SD, would the stock TBi work be a better fit?

Thanks

Done both.

Edelbrock did have a TBI manifold for the SD4, but it only fit a single injector TBI.

There were a couple of other Edelbrock SD4 manifolds available - the 4-bbl and the 2-bbl.
I believe both have bosses that can be machined for port style injectors (I know 4-bbl does). I ran a 4-bbl carb.

BUT there are a lot more choices for fuel injection now than in 2006 when I rebuilt my SD4.
I saw this system on eBay. While he wanted a lot for it, he didn't want to include the "small bits" that would make it work.
I would have needed to modify the trunk wall to clear the throttle mechanism. Just the intake is a close fit.

I installed a FAST EZ-EFI self-tuning TBI system that bolts on like a 4-bbl to the Edelbrock 4-bbl manifold.
While hardware fit/worked, the "self-tuning" didn't. I'm now running the hardware with a GM ECM and TunerPro.

Brief description and link to "long sad story" of my experience of the FAST system with THEIR ECU here:

FieroMonkey on here is running the Kinsler setup. It is VERY pricey but works great:

FIEROSOUND...WOW.... That is a sad story. Props to you for staying with it for so long. I would have thrown in the towel after a few weeks. Thanks for the info. I didn't know about that Edlebrock intake for the single TBI. Looks interesting since it appears very very similar to the stock piece. I'm guessing these dont come up for sale very often.

Seems like you ultimately came up with a great solution. I'm not afraid of computers, but don't really know the first thing about tuning fuel/air stuff on a car. I'm not sure that would be a good path for me to follow. I can see myself having something that wasn't tuned right and just getting frustrated.

Just for kicks, did you ever try using the stock Duke throttle body and stock ECU? Obviously it wouldn't give optimal HP, but curious to know if it would be 'driveable'

You thought correctly about more power requiring more air. The Holley guy didn't know what a SD4 is and was trying to sell you something more expensive than you had picked out. The 2 barrel V6 TBI might not be big enough unless the stock output was closer to what you expect the SD4 to put out... Are you looking at a 4.3 V6 TBI unit?

Yep, that was the one, I was thinking of. I see a few on Ebay for around 70 bucks..

REAL Indy had a TBI unit on an Edelbrock intake but could never find any details on it or ECM used.
But I would not have wanted to modify trunk wall to make it fit. Maybe that was just to clear air cleaner?

Looks like it was just for the air cleaner... which is pretty ridiculous in my opinion.

I think you may be right. Found another picture how GM did these.
