Fiero Safety (Page 1/1)

We love our cars and enjoy driving it on the limit but sometimes the maintenance evade us due to either our enthusiasm or negligence. Watch this and learn from the mistakes of others. I wish you a safe Fiero experience!

Many years ago, I went out with my aunt and her children to the La Ronde amusement park.

I was the designated driver, with their family car. It was a Nissan B14 Sentra, automatic trans.

Going down the off-ramp (speed about 50 km/h) from the Jacques-Cartier bridge (about 150 feet elevation), the brakes iced up. I shifted to low, which helped reduce speed somewhat. The parking brake didn't work, because it used the same faded brake shoes as the service brake.

I ended up going through an intersection without stopping, but there was no collision. I was honking the horn and flashing the headlights. It was kind of a scary moment.

I think the car was undermaintained...

I posted that video four months ago (Don't ignore brake issues!), but it certainly doesn't hurt to see it again.

What a moron. The brakes are the #1 most important part of the car, 2nd is the tires.

Out teacher in high school said the first day no matter how good your car runs with out brakes it is useless.

This guys issue was not so much brakes as it was the car had other issues. Even with all that HP it should have not idled that high or had a hung throttle.

If anything he should have hit neutral or turned the key too.

Knowing what to do if the gs go wrong is a must. You must plan ahead.

I was driving a customers 60 Pontiac and the engine mount let go, it wanted to run 60 mph with out touching the gas. I hit the key and got it off the road.

This car was back from before they interlocked engine mounts and it pulled the throttle.

One of the features of EVs is regen braking. Though no substitute for hydraulic braking and cable emergency braking.

Back around 1990, I had my '73 mach 1....driving just down the street from my apartment, came to major street with UN-stopped cross-traffic....hit the brakes and rolled thru the intersection. I replaced the MC and problem solved- well, I still had to clean my shorts!

Cars that sit for long periods can develop problems, also. Any time I take the Fiero for a drive I test everything- brakes, steering, suspension, engine.

Exactly! When I'm instructing at the track the first thing I teach the newbies is braking! I spend the entire first day on braking only and they get faster and faster just learning the braking threshold based on the weight of the vehicle and how much braking power that vehicle has!

The second day is cornering. I always get first timers so they are drivers that have never been on track so my main priority is safety.
Since they learned to brake properly the previous day, now they can capitalize on braking and getting on the power sooner.

I daily drove a Subaru STI for 7 years, my favorite part of the car was the Brembo's. Only got better after I replaced the original tires with Pirelli P ZERO's.
