oil, oil everywhere.. did my oil pressure sending unit just fail? (Page 1/1)

So, has anyone ever have a oil pressure sensor fail and dump oil everywhere? I was out driving my red 88 today and I'm just driving along minding my business when out of the corner of my eye I see a red light come one. My oil pressure was at about 10psi, red light on and i look in the rear view mirror and all I see is smoke everywhere. I'm about 1/2 mile from my house so I limp home, running one red light, and pull into the driveway. Stop the car, pop the trunk and whoosh... smoke and stinky oil smell.

Today i jack the rear up, clean, clean, clean it all up and i'm looking for what the hell happened. After all the oil was cleaned up, the only place I could see, still dripping oil, was the body of the oil pressure sending unit, where the plastic body meets the metal end w/ threads. Doesn't seem to be coming out of the threaded area, its leaking at the body/stem.

anyway, just wondering if anyone else has had such a failure.

Thanks

Rob

Possible Oil Pressure Sender Leak?......HELP!

88 sender isn't same as other shown in that thread but still possible or line/fitting(s) on v6 to it died.
V6 likes to "blow" the distributor seal.

Seem is L4 from description... little or nothing but the sender there has pressurize oil when engine runs.
Lifter cover and others get non-pressurize oil that may leak but not empty the sump fast.

Think is 1 1/8" or metric close to same size and only use a wrench on metal.
Can wreck the replacement if you turn on the plastic w/ plies, strap wrench, etc.

Might as well change oil filter and what's left of oil at same time.

Sounds like your pressure sensor is mounted low, beside the oil filter. If you have replaced the filter anytime in the recent past, it might be that the filter was tightened too much or even too little, causing the gasket to blow, or the gasket from the old filter remained attached to the block.

Sorry all, forgot to mention that its a 3800 motor w/ a stock 88 OPSU installed (the three wire unit). I replaced it w/ a new one, no more leak. Attached is a pic of the sending unit, when I compared the old one to the new one, the old one has a hole in the bottom of the electrical socket. You can put a pick thru the hole and into the sensor. This is where it was leaking from. This is the second time a OPSU failed this way, my daughters 2002 Beetle did the same thing. Anyway, its fixed now.... I hope.
