Ok, I have yet another question. My coupe has a 3.4 engine from a mid 90s Camaro or similar. From what I have seen the longitudinal engines from Camaros used a different starter than the transverse newer 3.4. My question is which do I use since originally the engine was a longitudinal but the starter was moved to the opposite side for transverse. I would like to get a reduction starter that is used in the newer transverse engines but I want to make sure it will fit. Thanks
After thinking for a few minutes I think I already know the answer to this. If you used a starter intended for one side of a block and then installed it on the opposite side the solenoid would be on the bottom. Is that the only difference ie: are the bolt patterns the same? Thanks again[This message has been edited by TXGOOD (edited 05-15-2019).]

Assuming you devised a way to mount it on the other side, it would rotate the engine backward.

The casting that holds the engagement gear is unique, side to side. You can not use a left mount starter on the right side, or right mount on left side.

So you get a starter for a front wheel drive 3.4 or 3.8 motor? Thanks Radar and everyone else.[This message has been edited by TXGOOD (edited 05-15-2019).]

Olejoedad, you're right. I was picturing the flywheel with a right side starter moving downward at the point of engagement and the left side moving upward at the point of engagement.
It would cost more to modify the starter than to purchase a gear reduction starter. The 98 Grand Prix 3800 gear reduction starter will fit. The AutoZone part number for a suitable replacement is 96211[This message has been edited by fierofool (edited 05-15-2019).]

If you're looking for a gear reduction starter, then yes. The standard Fiero starter will fit too.

I ended up getting a starter for a 1999 Buick Regal supercharged. Works great. No shims needed. Some people have remarked that they don`t like the sound of the magnetic reduction starter but I think it sounds nice and smooth. Thanks for everyone`s help.
