Fixing steering column (Page 1/2)
painandgain99 OCT 19, 07:04 PM
So i rented a wheel puller. Got the wheel off. Got the little ring/clip off without the special tool. Then i got stuck. I couldnt get the steering column plastic cover off because 1: wires were attached to the turn signal lever which i couldnt figure out how to detach or get out and 2: wires were attached to the white plastic ring. Then i gave up and tried to put it back together, and i cant get the little clamp/ring back on and i dont have the retaining tool . All photo tutorials for disassembly skip the part im at that I've seen. Im trying to fix my loose steering column. Does anyone know of a video to help here?

The turn signal stalk connector is plugged in lower down on the steering column. After you unplug it it just pulls out. I would not recommend reassembling a loose steering column. Driving with a loose column is dangerous. You must fix it for safety. Take your time and disassemble the entire column right down to the cup at the bottom. This requires also getting out the column pivot pins. After all is off, at the bottom you will find four torx bolts that must be tightened. Re-tighten and use Loctite Red. Try to get a picture of the column from the factory manual. That shows how the column is constructed. The column only assembles one way so you really can't put it together wrong but it must be assembled in sequence. Last time I did this job, with the special tools, it took me about 2 -3 hours from start to finish.

Thank you, i have the service manual but it doesnt give a detailed disassembly or vice versa. Can anyone link me again to a disassembly and re assembly please?

Having trouble getting out the pivot pins, autozone does not have the remover. I tried putting a screw in and pulling with a vice grip but no luck. Any other way?

In the disassembly above^ he doesnt go very deep to get to the bolts that need to be tightened.. in another disassembly ive seen, you have to go all the way down the column. Are there different bolts that cause the loose steering column? Can anyone tell me the names of the bolts? In my service manual it has a diagram, if i know what the names of the bolts are, ill know how deep i have to go to get to them.

You need to disassemble all the way to the cup at the bottom. There you will see four Torx bolts that hold the cup in place. Those are the ones that are loose and causing the problem. Getting to those Torx bolts means taking the pivot pins out and removing the U joint. To get the pivot pins out requires some creativity. Its been a while since I did one but IIRC I put screws into the pins and yanked them out with a claw hammer or nail puller. When you get the U joint apart there are many bearing balls there that help the rotation. The bearing balls are easy to lose but are standard hardware items. You reinstall them using thick grease to keep them in place during re-assembly. Its not a hard job but a lengthy tedious task. The first one is always the hardest.

Dennis,
Do you have a rebuilt steering column, with Red LocTight that you can sell me? I would REALLY like the rebuilt one so I do it have to worry about any future wobbly steering.
Cordially,
Kevin
