the pipe going out of the back of the engine is the heater supply line, the one that tees into the coolant tube is the return.
on my car (a 1985 SE) I'm setting it up to dump the heater return into the coolant tube like the later cars. here's what I did so far:
Cut the pipe off of the coolant tree

Welded up the hole

and on my car, I am making a new custom pipe to relocate the supply to near the timing cover. I'd bet that you could pick up a early car's rear heater tube cheap enough and install it on the rear bulkhead, and then use the stock 3400 tube the goes into the lower intake.

the tube is actually pretty well placed, I just didn't like it on my car.
