O.K. I've just got lucky. A mate just called and said that he had come across a 2001, L67 3800SC, 4L60-E transmission, ECM and wiring harness for $500 AUD ($350 US). At this cost, what do I have to lose? It's high mileage (155K) but runs and I would need to do a tear down and rebuild of the engine. I reckon I can sell off the rear wheel drive tranny and offset the cost of a 4T60-E from the the U.S.

I've found bits and pieces in the archives and on the interweb. I'm wondering, though, is there a definitive, step-by-step guide for installing the 3800SC? I've found instructions for the 3.4-litre but nothing for the 3800SC. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

There is this list https://www.fiero.nl/forum/Forum2/HTML/139530.html

But seeing where you live and the fact that most parts are thousands of miles away I suggest you read up on everything that Dark Horizon and Justin Bart did.

The 3800 is very expensive to rebuild.
There is a lot of info on this Forum pertaining to the swap and rebuilding the engine.
Its easier to do your searches via google, rather than the Forum's search feature.

From what I have read, 155K is not high mileage on a 3800.

THe 3800 also seems to have a much higher than expected failure rate after a rebuild (spun bearing)

Don't try to rebuild unless you have $$ to burn. you will go down for over $200 just in BOLTS (they are NOT re usable). failure rate is in direct proportion to people thinking that CAN reuse the rod and main bolts.

100% agree. I got my 97 L67 seven years ago with 150k miles on the clock. Just made sure it had no major leaks, good oil pressure and compression. 7 years later, HUNDREDS of high 11 second passes with no issues.

I keep hearing this kind of stuff but am not sure where it comes from. Not saying I disagree - I have not rebuilt a 3800 so I have no first hand experience. From those why have rebuilt their 3800's it would be nice to know if they had any issues first hand... Main thing is don't rebuild the 3800 unless it really needs it. It is SOLID!
