What year is you car? The ajar indicator will illuminate with either door, hood, or trunk lid open. Everything needs to be shut to make the light go off. If the light is on with everything closed, you will need to unplug the switches, one at a time, until the light goes out to figure out which one is bad.

Mine stayed on on my 87 GT as well. It was the front hood. Switch was to short to reach the hood. I was too lazy to adjust it, so I put a low side R12 A/C fitting cap on it. Been that way over 2 years now. Problem solved
