I have a Leather wrapped '88 GT steering wheel that the leather is in very poor shape, especially at the 12 o'clock position.

What is the finish, on the wheel, under the leather?

If I remove the leather, can I clean up the wheel and have somewhat of a decent looking steering wheel until I find a better one to replace it?

Thanks for the help.

$500 will get you a new steering wheel! $288 to re-cover yours. Trying to decide if I want to try to do it myself.

You might consider going to Autozone and buying a steering wheel cover (measure the width of the wheel first).

If you strip the steering wheel I suppose you could drive the car that way. Just smooth hard plastic. Grip area is about half the circumference of a normal wheel. Doesn't look very good.

I don't know what kind of stuff was originally used between the hard plastic and leather cover but it didn't age well. On the one I stripped the under layer had turned to mush. Was a sticky mess. Had to use mineral spirits to get it all off.

Anyone purchasing a new leather cover with intent of installing it themselves would need some type of padding to go beneath it.

Anyone have a solution ?

It sounds like you need an Adapter Hub, which is not included.
Not sure if you can use the stock Fiero horn contacts, or will that need to be some kind additional of mod?
If the Adapter Hub is not too pricey, and you can get the horn button to work easily without much re-wire of addition parts, it might be a good deal.
