Isn't the front light for the sunroof? so you can see the compartment at night I have t-tops. And they go in the trunk. There is a light there. But you will need a switch and check to see if you have the pigtail. I beleive it is a green and a white wire. My non sunroof 86 had the complete connection taped up in the front harness. Just had to get a bulb and bracket
It would seem more appropriate for the light to be on all cars to illuminate the jack & spare tire area rather than for the sun roof.
The parking light switch has to be on.
Rotate the push switch by the hood latch to make contact through the corrosion & the light socket should get power. Some lights are on brackets, some just hang from the wiring harness.
My car is an mid year 88 GT T-Top car has every optioned available except lumbar and has the compartment lights in the front AND in the back? The car is stock from what I know but anything can happen in 26 years. My car also does have the rare bracket supports for the electric power steering they never put in so maybe mine is different.
But I would think they would put the light there as a courtesy for all years for the jack and spare in the front?

That and they are 25 dam years old, the hood may have been changed, the PO could have removed the light, the bulb may be burnt out, it may have never been installed. To be honest I never even have looked for mine and it maybe part of a convenience light option, and as I said above it could just not be there for any number of reasons.
Where does it go? I have no idea I never even opened the hood on my 86 SE after dark for any reason and never looked for it. But it is possible that any one of those things I said above is why its not there and that you can't find it.

There was a lot on penny-pinching going on by '88 with regard to the Fiero. The cheaper nose emblem and plain door sill inserts come to mind. Perhaps the front light also, but there seems to be no consistency.
The only year with lettered door sill inserts (Body by Fisher, FIERO) was 1984.

Look closely in the front compartment on the passenger's side - you may find a small socket just hanging from the wiring harness for a 194 push-in bulb. It might be tucked behind the wiring harness. It should get power when the hood is up & the parking light switch is on. If not, twist the white plastic top plunger switch back & forth to work through the corrosion & it'll probably light up.
The switch definitely sets the "ajar" light in the dash. Mine didn't work after I reset the hood "down" location and required a little "hat" to push the plunger down far enough to turn off the light. I'm going to have a look for the socket on my harness. Never had the light on my 87 hardtop.
This may shed some light on the subject.... 1984 RPO TR9 Lamp Group - standard on Indy, optional on other models 1985 RPO TR9 Lamp Group - standard on GT, optional on other models 1986 - same as 1985 1987 RPO TR9 - standard on GT and MERA, optional on other models 1988 RPO TR9 - standard on GT, other models optional.
The front lamp was discontinued as a running change sometime during the 1988 model year.

I've had my 87 GT since new. No sunroof or top, has air. To my amazement I have the light - and it works, under the hood. For all the times I have been cleaning and painting in there I never noticed it. I have no idea why mine has the light.

Your post made me realize an error in my TR9 chart post, I have edited to correct the mistake. Your 87 GT came with the TR9 Lamp Group option as standard equipment.
