I have often been unable to find old post perhaps i am forgetting keywords etc but i know as a webmaster that hackers screw everything and i am sure over the years that posts have gone missing etc or were under a different cgi-bin folder. What i am asking is how much of the PFF is gone? Or is it all in tact with years worth of archives. Is some of it on CD only how much luck have you had keeping the history of pff?

There are archives that keep technical info (accessible using SEARCH), but probably only cliff could answer how much. Personally i think that some info SHOULD be deleted becuase there is no real Good purpose for keeping it. A good examlp is the OT section. In my opinion, ALL threads in OT should be deleted after something like 90 days. Some people post some surprisingly personal stuff there (maybe in moments of personal weakness) and it should not come back to haunt them. the Mall stuff could probably be deleted as well, because it has a limited time of usefullness.

Geez, I'm sure glad you're not in charge here.
Some people put a lot of time, effort, and thought into many of their O/T posts. It would be a shame to have these posts wiped out. It's all part and parcel of the history of PFF.
Regarding the Mall, it's handy to be able to look back and see what items have gone for what prices.

well, it looks like you've come back to post a personal dig at me for the response i made in the technical section about a fan motor that was NOT directed at you. I posted MY OPINION above - if you don't like it too bad.

As usual you missed the point, WHICH IS the personal nature of many of the posts in OT. I won't waste any more of my time trying to explain this to you. Next time have your mommy or someone who is a better reader than you help you.

Missed again. What good is it to know how much something used to cost YEARS AGO ?! price comparisons are only good for so long.
i'm not gonna argue with you Patrick. You can be a bonehead if you want (or maybe you were just born that way and can't help it) ....

Except for posts in The Mall (which I didn't think was necessary to archive until a few years ago) and part of the "Sorry FieroLisa, I love Gwen Stefani" thread, nothing is lost. It's all in the archives from the very first post ever made on this forum.
You should be able to find any post you're looking for, but problem is that most people don't know how to use the search properly. It works very much the same as Google (you can use boolean operators or do a phrase search - it even supports "stemming").

Thanks for the links Cliff Gave me a nice feeling, reading those words written so long ago, and to see the names there...most of which still contribute! Sad to say Don has passed on, but nice to see this! Nick

I agree with PaulJK but its not my data, it's Cliff's. There is a number of quite personal stuff and viewpoints posted here (particularl T/OT, and General before OT was was created). Anything posted here is also discoverable, and you never know when/how/why something could be used against you. I would like to see everything except for Tech with a "shelf-life" but that's me. I wasn't particularly thrilled when archive cd's were distributed, but again, not my choice.

I whole heartedly agree with Patrick. Anything personal was much more personal at the time it was posted when it could do more harm. I can not think of one thing which becomes more embarrassing, more hurtful, etc. If anything, it is less obscure. I am glad to know the mall will not be achivable. What something cost years ago is always a starting point if nothing else.

Happy belated 11th anniversary, Cliff!
...and no one had to bug him to update the banner at the top! Is PFF still available on CD/DVD? And how big would all that archived stuff be? And how much to purchase, or can I simply download it?

Thanks, but I don't miss the point very often, such as your demonstration now of how to be a dink.

What's this "YEARS AGO" you're now spouting? Your original post stated 90 days. Change your tune much?

It's because of ignorant pricks like you that I (and many others) don't spend nearly as much time here anymore.

I agree about the mall as eventually it wont matter what was sold at what price, but i think OT is worthy of keeping ( perhaps aside from stuff that hits the trash can, but even that would be of entertainment value )

Too big for CD or DVD. Worse... Because users won't PIP'ed images... Allot of post are useless w/o the images. (I know... PIP has it own problem. Not Mac friendly is one...) Example: https://www.fiero.nl/forum/Forum2/HTML/096693.html Site w/ images went down. (it back for now) Other images get move or deleted by user at photo site.
Forum is two sites... Forum data is on www.fiero.nl. PIP images is on U.S. site... Bellweather service I think.

There are ways to capture a website and convert it into a local standalone copy, including off site references for images and videos. But god only knows how many 100's of gigs that would be if it was tried here.

If what ever you're posting is "personal" and you have any reason at all to be concerned about others knowing about it, then maybe a public forum isn't the right place to be discussing it. While many of the members on here tend to think of each other as family, its still the internet, and there's no good reason anyone shouldn't be aware of that already...heck, we all found it somehow.
I'm glad TOT is archived along with most everything else, there's been plenty of times I've gone looking for (and found) threads from at least a year ago which were suddenly relevant again for some reason.

LOL.....and Raydar and Monkeyman were there to witness it. Does that make them prophets of Cliff?
Jim
I can't believe I posted in the very first thread ever on PFF. I really *do* feel special. Not that anyone cares, but I got here because of a dislocated shoulder.

No--disciples perhaps----prophets would have foretold of the coming of PFF. "And behold--in my vision, I see a man from the East---holding a blue dingie thingie........."
