I have never heard that term before. Why is it called a "bugout" bag?
AFAIK< Bugout is a term originating at least as far back as the Korean War. A seesaw conflict where the front lines changed on a weekly basis for awhile. When a US facility was in danger of being over run, that was the word tht was passed along BUGOUT! and eeryone headed for the road, with whatever they could carry. Don't you ever watch M.A.S.H. ?
The usual stuff is in my bag, plus I grab an attache with all our life & health ins papers, birth certificates, vehicle titles, property deeds etc.

To bugout means to leave in a hurry. Its a military term in origin me thinks.
In my cars each theres a survival bag containing water purifying tablets,5 k-rations, survival knife, thermal foil blankets, plastic ponchos, water proof matches, wind up torch, wind up radio, signal mirror, mag-flint, glow sticks, extra socks, duct tape, ammo, small first aid kit and small tool kit. All my really important paper work is in a carry safe that can be plucked quickly.

agreed bugout and zombie are not the same classification.
Zombies leave you with enough time to gather up for the drive And do things like pry the swords of the wall and run then through the sharpener. Build some molitovs.

home is where i keep my gas masks, ammo and water purification. i do carry a spare blanket in the car for cold weather.
there are no likely germ/chemical/ biological targets nearby, and the only troublesome weather we have here are tornadoes. by the time i know there's one bearing down on me there's at best time to dive for the basement. it's highly unlikely i'll go anywhere.

yeah, tornadoes come fast and hard. and likely a neighbor (or neighbors) will take you in. but we often lose power for a week or more at a time from the ice storms and that's the whole neighborhood.

I don't have a bugout bag. I always kind of prepared to stay and defend sort of thing.
Great, now I need to get an army surplus 6x and outfit it as a bugout bag. Man I got enough sht to do. This I didn't need.
If you live in Cali its not a worry for you. All you have to worry about is earthquakes and mudslides. Earthquakes your screwed regardless and mudslides only if you live on a hill. The rest of us have tornadoes and some like those on the east and south coasts have hurricanes.

The last big tornado WalMart was out of commission for a week, they didn't even try to open. Gas was out to, so driving too far to get supplies was out of the question for allot of people. The same happens in the Ice Storms, the roads are usually clear except for trees and Jehovah witnesses. Now the zombies, those I am not ready for, hopefully they will realize I am really fatty, and don't really taste good.
Question for Rumor though, how do Zombies do on escalators and elevators?

Buddy, you forgot my most important item: some cheap red wine. At home, our tornado shelter (a.k.a. our "hidey hole") is also our wine cellar. If we're still alive when they dig us out, at least we'll be happy.
On a more serious note, a hand-cranked LED flashlight is in my personal kit. They're cheap, and the lack of batteries to run down makes them a very attractive and useful item. Also, at any given time we have more than a hundred gallons of potable water available from our home plumbing system.

TRUE good point Marvin. Most people dont think about that. If something "bad" does happens. you can close off the main water line. you have a lot of CLEAN water in your pipes.
use the drain on your hot water heater to get it out of your house.
there's probably 2 gallons of clean water in the tank of each toilet in your house that you've never thought about.

My bugout bag mostly consists of diapers and wipes...
I guess it depends on the situation. 1. A tornado you probably won't have time to leave. Just get to the lowest spot you can find and pray. 2. Ice storm/power outage/aftermath of tornado. If you plan on leaving your home where do you go? Motels will soon fill up. If you stay in a motel why all the survival gear. Food/clothes, etc is all you will need. Same thing if you have family close, just get some clothes and get comfortable. The best plan maybe to stay put in your home. I have several gallons of water, bunch of batteries, lots of canned food and a deep freeze full of meat. If its cold enough the meat will last in the freezer. its cold in the garage and if you don't open the door too much it will stay cold for a long time. (it takes 2-3 days for me to thaw a turkey or ham in the refer, in a closed enviroment to could last a couple of weeks). Anyway this is a doubled edged sword: if its cold outside meat and other goods will stay good longer, of course you will have to stay warm; if its warm out you won't have a way to keep perishable goods cold but will stay warm. I have a gas fireplace so as long as the gas lines are good i can seal off the living room with blankets and provide a warm living area and be able to cook and boil water if needs be. My biggest downfall in a situation like this is milk for the my baby. I can't stockpile that and formula runs out quick. she can always be weened i guess. 3. Terrorist attack on KC. This one is kinda tricky, stay put and see how bad it really is or head for the hills. I've got the food, water, ammo, etc to last a while but if its something toxic we'd have to leave. I could seal off a living space of the house but in the end you will need clean air. 4. All out sh!t hits the fan/chaos/anarchy! In this situation i'll try to figure out where the biggest threat is and get my family away from here. The closest place would be the lake house about 2 hrs south of here. next would be family in central MO or my hillbilly cousins in southern MO. then depending on what was happening my best friend in Dallas or brother in MN. In this kind of "fire sale" situation its going to be pretty ugly, i don't know if you can really prepare for that. the gas shortages, complete loss of order, mass panic, it would become very bad very quick.

I'm confused about the bugout bag protocol and priorities here. Is it wooden stakes, mallet, silver bullets, garlic, Crosses, molotovs, and mirror? or flashlights, drinking water, food, etc?
