Instead of finishing up some much needed projects on the Fiero yesterday, girlfriend talks me into some honeydo's in the yard yesterday. Well one of them was replacing the water hose that broke so last night I go down to Wally world- that's Wal-Mart for those that don't know, to get one. As I'm standing in line to pay for it I noticed a large warning on the lablel...."NOT LABELED FOR SALE IN CALIFORNIA". Now I'm originally from Calif and I know they have some weird enviromental laws but they ban certian garden hoses??? This paticular brand is even made from recycled material, you would think that would make them happy.
Any ideas on why a garden hose would be banned in Calif? This one has me scratching my head.

San Francisco – A California court signed a final settlement late last week in cases brought by the Center for Environmental Health (CEH) against makers of garden hoses. Under California’s toxics law Proposition 65, CEH sued the producers for hoses that leach lead into water, a potential hazard especially for children who drink from hoses or play in hose spray. Lead can cause brain damage and irreversible developmental problems in children.

Wow I guess I should sue the state of Calif then for not protecting me as a kid then. I can't even begin to tell you how many sprinklers I ran through as a kid or all the long cool drinks I took from a garden hose.
Come to think of it I should sue them for all the things I did as a kid that you can't do now.
First, we survived being born to mothers who smoked and/or drank while they carried us.
They took aspirin, ate blue cheese dressing, tuna from a can, and didn't get tested for diabetes.
Then after that trauma, our baby cribs were covered with bright colored lead-based paints.
We had no childproof lids on medicine bottles, doors or cabinets and when we rode our bikes, we had no helmets, not to mention, the risks we took hitchhiking.
As children, we would ride in cars with no seat belts or air bags.
Riding in the back of a pick up on a warm day was always a special treat.
We shared one soft drink with four friends, from one bottle and NO ONE actually died from this.
We ate cupcakes, white bread and real butter and drank soda pop with sugar in it, but we weren't overweight because......
WE WERE ALWAYS OUTSIDE PLAYING!!
We would leave home in the morning and play all day, as long as we were back when the streetlights came on.
No one was able to reach us all day. And we were O.K.
We would spend hours building our go-carts out of scraps and then ride down the hill, only to find out we forgot the brakes. After running into the bushes a few times, we learned to solve the problem.
We did not have Playstations, Nintendo's, X-boxes, no video games at all, no 99 channels on cable, no video tape movies, no surround sound, no cell phones, no personal computers, no Internet or Internet chat rooms..........WE HAD FRIENDS and we went outside and found them!
We fell out of trees, got cut, broke bones and teeth and there were no lawsuits from these accidents.
We ate worms and mud pies made from dirt and the worms did not live in us forever.
We were given BB guns for our 10th birthdays, made up games with sticks and tennis balls and although we were told it would happen, we did not put out very many eyes.
We rode bikes or walked to a friend's house and knocked on the door or rang the bell, or just yelled for them!
Little League had tryouts and not everyone made the team. Those who didn't had to learn to deal with disappointment. Imagine that!!
The idea of a parent bailing us out if we broke the law was unheard of. They actually sided with the law!
It's amazing I managed to grow up!!!

That reminds me of the time I was draining my waterbed and the end of the hose was out to the front sidewalk. I looked out the window just in time to see some fella pick up the end and start drinking. His reaction was priceless!

Oh come on, it’s common knowledge that Californians have taken to using colanders to transport their water.
But what do I know, just being a hoser and all...

Substances used in vinyl garden hoses to keep them flexible can get into the water as it passes through the hose. These substances are not good for you or your pets. There are hoses made with “food–grade” plastic that will not contaminate the water. Check your local hardware store for this type of hose.
California is run by leftist moonbats that think that they need to duplicate every federal agency, they think that they have the market cornered on intelligence. Many products have to exceed the federal requirements, and if you look hard enough some liberal entity or person profits from the increased legislation. Cal/epa cal/osha etc are just two examples of duplicated bureaucracies.
If it has anything to do with liberal social issues that may be harmful to a person though, rubber stamp itand send it on through...
Restrict the right of Americans to own guns because they cannot be trusted. Put your kid in a public school, and he will be indoctrinated on how to be gay, the beautiful world of condoms, don't allow environmentally sound logging, let the beetles create fuel for firestorms, etc....
When my oldest daughter started school in the eighties in CA. we were given a list of products that she would need for school, it was about fifty bucks worth of stuff and the teacher said that it would be stored for the student. After about a week or so, after everyone brought in their supplies the teacher said "some of the students cannot afford to supply their own materials, so everyones supplies will be put into one cabinet to be shared by all." Hey, let's start socialism in Kindergarden and get these kids on the right path!
That is pretty much how the state works. I could go on for days posting idiotic policies generated by them Nimrods. California has a great climate, great place to vacation, and a lot of good people, etc..but their politics suck.

So, Trailboss, Your saying it's your God given right to drink out of a lead saturated garden hose? OK, but it will make you irritable and unable to get along with people.

No... what I am saying is that obviously the other fourty nine states either:
A. Aren't as wise as the Califronia legislators B. Figure that their constituency is expendable and/or this is a good population control tool. C. Probably realize that the risk is negligable, and don't feel the need to save people from themselves.
I tend to go with "C", if this were a problem, other health officials from other states would have passed legislation to safeguard their constituency. Garden hoses come in all types of configurations and materials, some are labeled "for drinking purposes" like the ones intended for RV hookups. I guess the rubber hose taste is an acquired thing to some, I have always preferred to go in the house and get mine from the tap.
I lived in California from 1978-2005. There are more pressing issues that these guys need to concern themselves with.

i think you'd have to ingest a huge amount of water to actually get poisining from a garden hose. damn thing is there is some hill billy running a well through a hose and doesn't realize what's happening.
as for the whole CA thing, just watch Erin Brockovich.

Trailboss, you pretty much nailed how it is in California. Although I might have to disagree about the climate. As I have been working on the HHR the past couple of days with it 112 degrees outside, I was thinking how I would rather be in GA or TN. California is screwed up. As you said, the state is intent on saving everyone from themselves.. and charging outrageous amounts to do it! Obviously they make up dangers to save us from. I don't want to get into the whole Liberal/Conservative argument, but if the shoe fits... give it to the poor and tax the rich for it.

BAAAH!!! I had to personally pull all of those damn Shirley Temple DVDs off the shelf last week for a "recall". Apparently, they made the "free charm bracelet" out of lead, and kids would suck on them/chew on them. Dumbasses.

Your description was so realistic, that I was sure that you were close to that. I'm 48 and ditto about the cars and bikes, You realise that we grew up in a very different world. If I had kids I doubt that I'd be able to let them out of my sight.

If it weren't for the goddam liberals, you could have left 'em on the shelf and sold 'em. Whats a little lead gonna do, anyway, pussies? It'd serve them snot nosed kids right, if you ask me. Goddam liberal union types are always messin with free enterprise. We have too many smart people in this country anyway. A little brain damage would probably be a good thing, wouldn't it? Tell me about it. We set a record in Morgan Hill yesterday, 114. Thank God it cooled off today, a balmy 108.
Wolf, you again put your foot in your mouth with the grace of a Howard Dean screech. California for ages tried to solve the mass immigration problem, not with tougher border control, but with new government jobs! Beauracracy run amok has led, as Trailboss pointed out, to unrelenting duplication of effort. The problem is that since Federal agencies are choked with beauracracy to the Nth degree, by adding a California layer ON TOP of that has not only led to ridiculous cost but near perfect inefficiency. CARB (California Air Research Board) is another agency that is costing billions to this state only to be able to tell us that our cars produce smog...ya think!?
It's tragic. That is why I am here to stay. I refuse to le the socialists continue to do this to the countries' most productive state, for the sake of all 49 of the others that NEED California.

They have restrictions on everything. The last time I was there I walked into a bar and asked for a drink and an ashtray since I didn't see any on the bar and from the commotion that ensued I thought the place was being robbed. The bartender was yelling at me to get out with the lit cigerette before they got a healthy fine from the state.
I hadn't been there in some time and wasn't aware you can't smoke while you drink, at least not in public.
