I would love to paint my fiero this winter and with Christmas coming up figured it might be a good time to get one. My biggest problem is I dont know which brand or which one to get. Ive used some of my dads "older" style guns before but have heard the newer HVLP guns are the way to go. Im not looking to spend a ton of money but also dont wanna waste my money on a piece of junk.

Thanks,
Jason

SATA has the best guns to use. They are HVLP guns and they work like a champ. the most important thing is keep it clean or the paint will not atomize correctly and you will get a crappy shot.

The HVLP guns are a big improvement over the old suction feed guns. You put much much less paint in the air with the HVLP. I painted my first Fiero using single stage PPG urethane using a suction gun, and my second using the same paint using an HVLP. The suction gun came car out a little better because the oriface on my HVLP was too large, but I had a huge amount of overspray everywhere. HVLP is the wasy to go, but you want one with a small enough oriface to get a good flow out. The problem is most of the HVLP guns require a very high volume of air. So if you buy a gun, make sure the compressor you have is large enough. Go with a 1.3mm tip. The smallest tip my gun supports is 1.4mm which puts out a little too much paint and orange peel.

I use a Devilbiss for primer / base and a SATA for clear. Can't complain.

If this is the only car you are going to spray, I would not buy a $500 spray gun. I would recommend the Devilbiss line. Here is a link to one with different tips for primer and final coat and a touch up gun for smaller areas along with cleaning kit and case.

$120 and free shipping

Ive used a lot of Harbor Freight El Cheapo $25 guns on used cars. Ive never had a problem getting a good looking job from any of them. My best gun is a $500 Accuspray that I use for all overs and clearcoats because it has such a high transfer of material. Due to the exceptionally low overspray, I can use about half the paint other guns use for the same job. For a few time home hobbyist, buy a lower priced gun....use what you save to buy the paint.

First I'd just like to say that I am in no way a professional painter.

I also am using the HF el cheapo paint guns. I did buy the touch up gun as well.

I'm paint in a pretty RAW environment.. ie, outdoors with only a "roof" to keep objects from falling onto the paint.

Still I've having really good results. I'm repainting my 84 metallic silver w/ 4 clear coats, and my S10 project with single stage paint.

In my case at least, I find as long as you take care of, and keep your equipment clean, you will have great results.

Good luck with yours

i just painted (last week) my '86 SE with that harbor freight gun. it was a panel off paint job and it came out great. like said above, keep it cleaned. on the net, type in "harbor freight paint gun". there is a fellow there that has real good instructions on how to adjust it. i followed his instructions and the paint job came out very good. i bought one gun for primer and the second for top coat/clear coat.

I would think any gun would be fine providing it actually works and with any new gun i would think will work on at least the first project. The big issue is sorting out the gun get the thinners to spray as you would to paint before you ever add paint and keeping it clean in general. If using metallics make sure you have really mixed through don't trust the shop to stir it. Also get someone that knows what your doing to buy the paint with you as it is a big industry joke to see that you fail as a non professional they may do things to stuff you up so buy lots of filters as you will need them when you buy your paint. I am no expert but if you know as little as me it might help.
