Hey gang,

Been away a couple years working on another project. Was getting my '88 GT ready to get out of storage in a couple weeks and was reminded of a project I never completed before putting her up a couple years ago. A couple years befor I put her away, the steering wheel started oozing that caramel colored crap, so I pulled it and installed a Momo until I could get it recovered. I've searched back thru the forum looking for a similar topic but came up empty...

Mine is a two tone (tan & brown) leather wrapped GT wheel from an '88 GT with beechwood interior and was wondering if there is a forum vendor who can restore/repair/recover the leather wrapped GT wheels? Is there a member who has done it who would share their secrets so I can do it myself? My 5 speed shifter knob (brown leather) also need replaced too! The Momo Tornado is nice but it's not original!

Thanks in advance for your help!

JOE

you can recover this your self ,the outer steering wheel is not difficult and can be covered with the leather covers available from auto parts dealers .. the cheapest I saw was from J.C. whitney chicago..
to recover the whole wheel is much more difficult ..I would not attemp this unless you consider yout self at least a mediocre craftsman..
The shift knob is a good place to start.once you have done a shift knob the wheel will be easier and you will know you want to attemp this ..
many fiero wheels can be restored by using leather conditioner on the leather and rewrapping the outer ring itself with the closest color kit you can find ..
the outer wheel kits are not made for a specific car ,,they are lace up and a few hours will find you with a good looking steering wheel
I have cut the leather from an old leather skirt, and cut the leather to fit then used a heavy carpet thread to cinch it up ..My hands are screwed up from an accident and the last one I did on my 88 duke 5 speed looked just passable .
the fiero store has complete new stock steering wheels starting at about $125.00

i did it before. theres a few posts by me in the archived section showing what i did. if you hunt around at a craft store, you can find adhesive backed foam like what was originally under the wheel. then use your old wheel skin to make a pattern for a new one. it will easily take you 8 hours or more to do it right and make it look good. my advice is prepunch the holes in the leather that will be sewed back in. the stitching is what takes the longest, have to use large leather needles and needle nose pliers to thread through

Thanks all!

I'll be sending my wheel and shifter knob off for recovering in a few weeks (awaiting tax refund) but I'm looking for a picture of the factory two tone tan wheel. Mine was one but the two shades are hard to see now. I remember years ago I posted something about my '88 Beechwood interior having a two tone wheel and a couple members replied that they also had them. Does anyone have a good clear picture that would show the color differences? I'd like to send that along so it can be matched.

Again my thanks,

JOE
