IS THERE AN AFTERMARKET TIMING GEAR FOR A 1985 2.5 4 CYLINDER ? Is there a steel replacement for the fiber gear ? If so, where to get ? how often should a fiber gear be replaced ? I'm tearing it down for a rebuild, should I change it ?? ( 115,000 miles.) thanks

8-1016 also fits and its OE style helical cut, which should be a bit quieter.

are the fiber replacements prone to breaking ? or only when they get 100K miles or so ? big price difference. nothing wrong with the one in it , except being 23 years old & 112,K miles, so I don't trust it. Thanks

CAN the cam gear be "tapped on" if the engine is fully exposed(out of the car) ? I can't beleive that a shop would go through "drilling & tapping " the Cam to change one. After seeing THIS, I'm SO gonna use the ALUMINUM gear !

well, if you are good you can do it with the engine in the car. however, if the engine is out of the car it is much easier to just pull the cam than tap the gear on.

EDIT: let me warn you, if you tap on the cam with the cam in the car, you are just going to tap out a freeze plug on the other side of the engine into the tranny bell housing. If you are going to put it on with the cam in the car, definately heat the gear up real good, transport it out in boiling water or oil (though not boiling oil ) and tank it out of the liquid the second you are ready to press it on. then it should work.

The engine will be out AND torn down. I figured I could have someone at the back of the engine holding a dolly up against the rear plug while I tapped it on, just wanted to make sure (in advance) that there wasn't something I didn't know about, pertaining only to fiero's that could cause me trouble. Thanks

Be extremely careful..its easier to heat the gear in the oven,, this will not hurt the oven,, I put a gear like this (never replaced fiero time gear,(I am a former M/C mechanic) in a small box in the sun, sometimes I paint the box interior black..if you do not think this works just lay a metal wrench in the sun and pick it up 30 minutes later..oven is better you can cool the cam with an ice pack.. cam gets smaller,, gear expands..
If you have any doubt about your ability to do this ,have a machine shop do it,if you use the machine shop have new cam bearings installed..
If the engine is out pull the cam, check for cam to bearing slop.. it is difficult for the home mechanic to properly check the cam to bearing clearence even with the mike,s use a feeler gage if one bearing has much more clearence than others,, machine shop..
Removal of gear is difficult part..you can back up gear and pull with sturdy puller,,unless an experienced motorhead use machine shop to press on you must work fast with hot gear
the bearings are not as tough as you think they are
Thrust plate clearance is 0.025 -0.130 listed in chilton manual//camshaft end play 0.0015 - 0.0050
you can use grease or heavy engine oil for cam bearings,,if you can get an 0.003 feeler gage between the cam and bearings..,, uh oh

What uhlanstan said. If you have the engine out and torn down, cut pull the cam out. You can tap the gear on real easy then (be careful what you rest the other end of the cam on though so you don't damage the end bearing surface). When I put mine on, I had it in the oven then ran outside with it. It cooled off when I did that so it went on real easy to start and bound up with it about halfway on. I tried tapping it in and the freeze plug came out, so I had to drop the powertrain and put it back in. I pulled the cam out at that time and it tapped on real nice and easy. If you put it in the oven in a tray of water or oil, it will stay hot longer if you take the tray out to your car, then extract the gear from the tray and put it on the cam right away. Once it cools, you will be golden.
