Bought an Air/Fuel kit for about $20 from down under. I want to use a blank area on the instrument panel for the LED's.

Remove cover, lens,

and black panel.
more later

Back.
Next mask off area.

Lay silver panel back on & draw the opening of the rectangle on the tape.
Layout centerlines and carefully drill holes for LED's.
Now we need a spot for the breadboard. Hmmm?

This looks good. Slot the plastic dividers for clearance.

Check the fit.

Cool!

Put LED's in board & bend leads to fit hole spacing.

Then solder LED leads to breadboard.

I had to use a round file to enlarge the holes slightly so the LED's would not bind. Metal panel needs to be removable.

All front panels in place.
By soldering a couple of wires to the temp gauges internal clips, IGN 12V+ and Ground, only one wire for the IP is needed. That splices into the O2 sensor wire going to the ECM.

Ready for installation.

This is my second kit. I did the same a few years back on my 86 2M4.

Installed & operational.

Thats a great idea for using that opening!

A couple years ago I installed the edelbrock O2 gauge in a vent in the center console. Knock out the vent fins and the unit slides right in. I used black RTV along all the sides to glue it it place. The only problem I had with it was it was in a Roadster and you really could not see the bulbs light up much due to the excessive sum light.

"Your" idea? I probably had the A/F sensor in my '86 2M4 before you had bought your Fiero.

I've wanted to do that since I saw pics of your first one, just never go around to it. Could you provide a few more details? Such as where you got the guage from, what you used to cut into the black panel and slot the dividers. Additionally, could you take some pics or make a simple drawing of where you had to solder everything and run that wire to the O2 sensor. I know a bit about electronics, but not enough where I could open up my cluster and know where to solder things without messing anything up.

I purchased the 120mph cluster on a Pennock aution.

"OK, shipping came to $8.87 for UPS. If I can get it out today you can have
it Tuesday, otherwise it will be Monday before I can get it out.
So the total would be 1/2 the shipping $4.44 + cost of item $ 42.00 =
$46.44.

My PayPal account is : maxthechainsaw@insightbb.com

Thanks
Max"

97K was what was on it when it arrived. My coupe had the GT gauges but only an 85 mph speedo.

How about a boost gauge? Anyone able to usefully located one of them close to the tach? Mine is mounted in the vent, but I can not monitor it and the tach at the same time.

Well, I didnt say I had patented it :P figured I wasnt the first.

As far as a boost guage, get a tach from a turbo sunbird, it looks almost identical, but goes to 7k and has the boost guage built into the empty space where the needle doesnt travel. Got one for my 3.4 DOHC maybe If im lucky I can get the Tach and boost needles to run into eachother at 7k and 15 psi they would hit, but by then I think Id be more worried about trying to figure out how to fly a fiero then watching any guages.

Australia.
That's where I got my A/F circuit board from as well.
Which of course went in that same slot
Anyone have any ideas what Pontiac originally intended to put there?

Good job on the installation. The only question I have is, since the O2 sensor works in mv, does the signal used by the AF monitor change what the ECM sees?

No. The A/F gauge is wired in parallel with the ECM (a splice into the O2 wire to the ECM). A National Semiconductor LM3914 display driver measures & responds to specific voltages output by the 02 sensor.

That principle is true for most A/F gauges.

Cut Panel: Drill bits, 1st a 1/16" dia. for all 10 holes after center punching locations, then 1/8" & last a 3/16" dia. drill bit. Then a round hobby file for final sizing.

Slot dividers: carpet shears, x-acto knife & soldering iron.
