A not so good day for UPS or me. (Page 1/2)
blackrams DEC 03, 07:56 PM
Was driving home yesterday (late) afternoon. Driving west on a well traveled two lane road home. Driving directly into the setting sun. Visibility was difficult but, I could see the Ford Pickup a hundred or so yards in front of me but not much more than that. Approaching a traffic light, all of a sudden, I saw something but too late to do anything. All of a sudden, there it was. Chunk of steel about 12 inches long, 8 inches wide and 8 inches tall. The resulting impact to my left front tire/rim was fatal, not sure about the suspension but now she pulls to the left a bit.

Turns out, this road debris has a UPS shipping label on it. The package was intended to be delivered to Salt Lake City, Utah. Had been shipped from a Hattiesburg Caterpillar dealership. Apparently, this package fell off the back of the truck! It is shoe box shaped and weighs 92 lbs. Spoke to the shipper, said he watched some tiny little lady carry the package out to her truck. Really don't know what happened after that except, it is now in my possession. Went to UPS to discuss the situation, they wanted the package back (which I didn't agree to). Told them, I want my truck fixed, they can have the package after their insurance adjuster sees my truck. They are filing an insurance claim. We'll see what happens. What I'm pretty sure of is, that driver won't be driving for UPS much longer.

92 lbs and the size of a shoebox with Caterpillar on it.

That Cat stuff is prized just like Gold, it's likely to be made of gold.

Almost as high priced as that green Deere stuff.

No idea on the value of the "package" but, will be calling the dealership today to check the price of a new wheel, the tire is $220 plus tax, an alignment is about $100. This assumes there is no other damage. Will probably take the Ridgeline to a collision shop and have them check it out.

I'm not looking to get rich off of this but, I do want to be made whole and have my truck fixed.

Hope you get it fixed quicker than they paid my claim. I shipped a front exhaust manifold to Ohio. It got to Lexington, Ky. and disappeared. Took nearly 3 months for them to pay my claim and that was just $100.

I gotta ask, how did you not see it, and not miss it.

He explained that in the opening post. Sun glare.

I can appreciate the sentiment...
At a certain time of day, in the curve where the turn off to my house is, it is very very difficult to see anything at all straight ahead due to the setting sun. I can see lrge objects (such as a vehicle) but would be hard pressed to make out smaller objects.

They want... Tough Crap. You need it until they pay for damage. Did you take pictures? Should have right then. Don't post them here or elsewhere.
Claim... Expect to have to get a lawyer and/or sue. Or maybe call local news stations for help trying to get repair paid. Shipper/Buying is out $ too because most ship w/o clicking want to add Insurance. W/o paying UPS for extra has maybe 100$ max insurance for a package and fight to pay even then.
Driver Fired over this... Likely Not. UPS is a Union Shop. Teamsters I think.
