Shipping a windshield to Europe? (Page 1/1)
cebix APR 19, 12:18 PM
I thought this would be the best board to post this topic. I'm looking to buy a windshield for my '85 2.5 but unfortunately nobody wants to give me a quote since I don't run a business and am a private person. Apparently the size/weight is too large and online I got quotes for $3000 to $5000 which is insane since I can import a whole car for half of that or less. Has anybody had any experience with this kind of shipping and could recommend a service? Thanks.

You are being given "go away" quotes. They don't want to be bothered with it so are quoting prices so high that you go away. Everything is closed here for the holiday weekend but I'll do some digging on Tuesday.

Thanks very much, I appreciate your help. I'm still digging too but everyone closes down here for the holidays.

I spoke with a local car shipper here in California and she said that the closest area they will ship is Rotterdam, Netherlands.
With that said, contact Cliff since he lives in the Netherlands and find out how he gets parts delivered.

That's a great idea, thanks.

Even if you Find a vendor that will ship... Most don't because big issues to get paid, many think is a scam, or otherwise big headache to deal w/ you.
$300 windshield will eat a lot of money to ship. Very few here has ever shipped anything to another county and have No Clue.

For one thing,
International shipping will require glass to be shipped in a custom crate that's often heavy to much heaver by itself just to hope the glass doesn't crack. Depending on Shipping Co, This crate will likely need to be palletized because of weight and size making heaver still. Time and money to make that will cost money to you.
Then add Cost to ship a heavy item cost them then passed along to you w/ a markup too.
Then add various Taxes to ship to you. You won't get that thru Customs in Poland etc w/o paying whatever Taxes and import/Export Fees etc.

Even if you have 1 Shipping company say DHL or FedEx the glass still has to go thru Customs and pay required money.

I shipped many things from US to/from Canada between 2 Offices in Same Fortune 500 Company and still had enough Customs problems and that's even w/ NAFTA that's supposed to make this easier. Don't bother sending overnight because US and Customs can take days to weeks to clear a shipment even when you have all the right paperwork attach to it.

Ship to Netherlands is not much better. Have to pay VAT and other Taxs/fees at Customs to deliver to X person. IOW same problems as ship to Poland. If then Ship to Poland just have to do this again. (US readers, VAT is similar to Sales Tax and often higher depending on whatever sold.)
Is Not like most things from China that purposely Mislabel shipments as "Gifts" etc to avoid this then often get held for days/weeks/longer or seize by Customs for whatever county.

Mike is right. You're getting a piss off price.
