How to delicately handle a turn-down (Page 1/1)
MidEngineManiac APR 14, 05:16 PM
I'm going to be needing to turn down some delivery work in the very near future...even though technically the destination IS inside my rough area (client wants me to drop stuff off in person).

What a nice way to say "I aint going near that place because its a sheet-hole infested with everything I hate, and the ONLY thing I would ever "drop off" there is a couple kilotons !" ?

Asking for a friend...yeh, thats it, a friend.

Tell then no and that its not a destination you deliver to. If you make up an excuse it will come back on you later.

Excellent advice. No explanation. Simple statement. If asked, rinse and repeat: "Not a destination I deliver to."

I agree with you. There are parts of Columbus I will NOT EVER go thru, even if I have to go 10 miles out of my way. In 'those' areas there is good likelihood you will be robbed or shot at a stop light in your car in the middle of the afternoon. Luckily there is nothing in it worth more than $5.00 I want.

Tell them straight on that you don't deliver there. Add something such as "due to a prior experience" and no need to elaborate further.

I once left a job due to that. There's nothing wrong with setting limits, and not going against your better judgement just for a paycheck. You life > some cash.

There are plenty of ways to make money.

What's with the need to be nice, if they're asking you to do something you don't want to do, be direct about it... Don't pussyfoot about it, make your feelings clear so they know better than to ask...

Its a college setting. If I am my usual azzholiness self they start crying and shaking, then wambulances full of play-doh and coloring books get called.

The emotional support animals have to show up, and their union is already on my azz for all the overtime I am causing them.

Its really-really ugly to watch. Have you ever SEEN a man with his mascara running and douche-knot tilted to one side ???

Even worse, they take their money and go home. Not just the one, but a whole big bunch of them. They really ARE like lemmings. What one does the rest do without asking.

And for now at least, I still need that money.

(Its a damn good thing my days of taking courses are over. I wouldn't last a week around the snowflakes without getting arrested)

Refer this customer to a couple of different delivery services. One can even get Uber pickups these days. Many options from cheap to secure-and-more-expensive ...

I hear ya. 2 months until I am in the new place with some shop space again and 6-8 until I can completely dump this "virtual assistant" gig and be back in a shop full time.

I am already pretty well equipped for hand-held power tools, just need a few stationary things. I was out looking at a Ryobi BT3000 today. Its a nice saw, really nice, for what I want but obsolete and parts/accessories are hard to get for it. I still have time so I'll keep looking.

Even already set myself up with lumber sources. I can get a full truckload of 5/4 hardwood (oak, maple, poplar, cherry ect) for 40 bucks. Its a local stair company that sells the off-cuts and splits ect as firewood. Most of the pieces are 18" or shorter, but I know how to splice boards and its kind of hard to beat that pricing. I can get skid boards for 50 cents each already disassembled so its not worth my time to do it myself.

That's what I did...Just never thought of it since I am so used to doing everything myself. A lot of times common-sense stuff like that never even enters my brain anymore, I've been let down so many times by humans who wont handle their share of responsibilities that the idea that others are out there and can help out usually never occurs to me. I've kind of retreated into an "ignore humanity" zone in a lot of ways. Dealing with "peoplekind" is usually more trouble than its worth.
