I caught some of this earlier today, on MSNBC. This is from BBC News.

Ex-Pope Benedict XVI blames 1960s revolution for sex abuse

Retired Pope Benedict XVI has published a letter which blames clerical sex abuse on the "all-out sexual freedom" of the 1960s.

He said that cultural and historical change had led to a "dissolution" of morality in Catholicism.

The sexual revolution in the 1960s had led to homosexuality and paedophilia in Catholic establishments, he claimed.

The letter sparked fierce criticism from theologians who claim it is "deeply flawed".

It is rare for Pope Benedict, who in 2013 was the first to resign in almost 600 years, to intervene in clerical matters. He had been accused of failing to protect children and suppressing investigations, allegations he denied.

The only solution to the problem, the former Pope said, was "obedience and love for our Lord Jesus Christ".

His [Pope Benedict's] analysis of the sex abuse scandals that have rocked the Roman Catholic Church takes a more theological and historical approach than Pope Francis.

At a summit in February, the current pontiff [Pope Francis] called for "concrete measures" to tackle the crisis, not just "simple and obvious condemnations".

Here's something I just "had" to retrieve from my own digital archive. It's from the "Imus in the Morning" radio and TV show. This is from 2013. When Pope Francis was elected to replace the retiring Pope Benedict. It's a musical skit. "Fat Elvis", as created by comic artist--"comedian" strikes me as unfairly condescending--Rob Bartlett. Before the "Imus in the Morning" show was "axed." Before Don Imus provoked a super-sized media and cultural controversy over a certain comment that he made, involving a college women's basketball team.

DO NOT... REPEAT... DO NOT start this sound file if you are averse to mixing Faith with Jocularity. Or if you do not wish to encoutner something that is a comic sendup or satire of the Vatican and also the person of Pope Benedict in what I would describe as a "mildly sacrilegious" way.

If Pope Benedict wanted to make a difference he should not have resigned.

The moment you left the office you became powerless.

In a somewhat connected event, today will go down in history as the biggest loss ever for Notre Dame.

But not the football team.

I can't think of anything quite like this. Witnessing the end of something that had stood for centuries and was so inseparable from the thought of "Paris."

This is a tremendous loss to the world.
Such a beautiful structure, the repository of an incredible amount of historical artifacts.
So very, very sad.
