OBD II scanner recommendation? (Page 1/1)

Hi all, looking for a scanner for my dad for Christmas, but I’ve never bought a decent one before. Here’s what I want:
-around $150, give or take
-ability to see engine data (I.e. fuel trim, temperatures, etc)
-nothing requiring Bluetooth or internet- just want a plug n play

Thanks!

I have a pc based scanner from obdcom that I have been very satisfied with . they also have a standalone scanner now for under $100. I have not used the standalone, but based off of my experience with their pc based one I am fairly comfortable recomending them as a company.

Get one that reads ABS and SRS too. At minimum ABS.
Many get OBD2 but Reading only OBBD2/CANBUS reads engine and trans not the others. Many stores w/ free reading services do not cover these systems.

SRS is Airbag(s), Seat belt pretension, etc. While most should not mess w/ them help to stop Dealers etc from ripping you off.

While can replace pads etc... Most ABS problems are electric problems and can take days to weeks w/o scan tool to read the system.
Example: A "bad" wheel sensor making Airbag Warning on the dash can be a crap filled or damage Tone ring, iffy connector(s), etc. ABS scanner can reset error(s) when trying to clean/fix cheap/free options first.

Thanks for your recommendation, I just received the stand alone unit and tested it out. It seems to be everything I was looking for. It also loads very fast compared to some other ones I’ve used.

I have the "Utlra gauge" It is pretty neat, it had 47 different items for the TDI that I could monitor, there are 7 different screens that you can select. The cost was cheap, 55 dollars. I can view the codes & reset them with the gauge. It can display turbo boost, voltage, what ever you want to monitor.

You can set high / low alarms on any of the items. Set mine for low fuel level and water temp over 210°

Here's a link for the product. http://www.ultra-gauge.com/ultragauge/
