Bad storms here yesterday and all night. Been on gen set for 15 hours now--us sitting inside the house, with windows/doors shut, the thing is horrendously loud with it sitting on the front porch. Not the best place for it I suppose, but for now that's the best place I have.
If it's on your porch the vibrations are going through your deck and making the noise worse inside. I've seen a few air compressor boxes. Basically just a plywood box filled with fiberglass insulation. Will work for generators too. Long as it can breathe
Use rubber to isolate that puppy. Have no idea what your setup looks like, but even a thick rubber mat can help with vibration noise And then box it in with some sound deadening panels and hinges so it's "EZ-access"
Google around for stuff, they have some fun solutions to your problem. Or, just wear earplugs.
Get it off the porch, first and foremost, it's like swimming in the water and pounding 2 rocks together you can hear it all the way across the lake or in your case feel it all threw the house.
Pore a slab near the side of the house, away from any bedrooms, larger than the generator so the enclosure will sit on the slab as well as the gen inside. make sure the enclosure has an exhaust pipe outlet. but you knew that. if you can plum the exhaust as far away from the house as possible, most generators have a small exhaust pipe, find some more pipe the same size and plumb it as par away from the house as possible, maybe behind another building or fence even.
insulate the sides and top of the box we'll call it for now, make sure the insulation is fireproof. and doesn't touch any of the hot parts of the gen. edit to add on Rumors idea Don, Stall mats Steve

easy and cheap box you don't have to make is a contractors job box, available cheap on Craig's list. take your cutting torch and cut it so you can get inside with a side door. making access easier when you need to put the gen. inside and maintain it.
Sit it on a piece of plywood or MDF as thick as you can get. Then put that on top of a partially inflated inner tube to isolate it from the porch floor. The main thing is to make the isolator as soft as possible to minimize noise transmission. If you don't have any spare inner tubes, an old pillow will work.
The box should be as heavy and stiff as you can make it. Line the inside with Dynamat sound deadening (if you've got a ton of money) or just spray on a couple of coats of undercoating. Then line the inside with fiberglass insulation. Yes, there must be an opening for ventilation. Make it along the side that will face off the porch. Not at the bottom, but toward the top of that side to keep the noise from getting into the floor again. Your generator probably has a cooling fan, work with it to get circulation inside the box as good as possible.
That's the best I can think of in three minutes. The guys in the videos probably have better ideas. I can't watch them right now.
See if you can find an old chest freezer for free somewhere....already has the insulation in place, already weatherproof....just needs some stripping down and adding some rubber isolation feet.
The trick might be finding one big enough to fit the genny inside.
I used to have a neighbor that had a similar problem, he moved his generator upstairs and let it run. I don't think doing that helped reduced the noise but, eventually the fumes got to him and the noise didn't bother him any longer.
In the mean time, go buy a very long extension cord capable of carrying the load, move the generator to where ever and enjoy the moment.

or you could just put it in a close by out building and use hard house wire, 8 should be fine for just the house get direct burial and you can just dig a shallow ditch with like a pick ax, not to deep that you need a backhoe to dig it back up but deep enough that it has about a ft. of dirt on top. I just back feed ours from my shops 220 line to the house. shut the line down to the public power and start my generator. then shut all non essential breakers down in the house and barn and it works for me. Drives the animals in the Barn NUTS!

I'd like to keep it on the porch, so I don't have to go out in the pouring rain to refuel it. We're at 8" since 7pm last night and pouring right now. We don't have power outages in nice weather. No innertubes but I have lots of old tires. I may try that. And, Steve, Roughly, 7500 full load watts at 120v ac calculates to 62.5 amps (not taking PF into account). #8 direct burial won't do it, and I don't run anything underground here without conduit. Might get by with 8 thwn in conduit tho.
I have some panels, that came out of a big walk-in cooler. 3" X 9' x 36" styro inside--Metal clad both sides on outside. Thinking about cutting a couple Vs in one, without cutting thru one of the metal sides, bending to form two 90 deg angles and just slide it over the generator--tunnel style. I might try setting the generator on another one as well just a little bigger than it's footprint. I sure won't be doing anything till the rain stops and see how how the water gets. Right now, it wouldn't take a whole lot of urging for me to unload this place and go back to W Texas if Jane was already finished with school.

Christ, have you got any fence lines that haven't been damaged from all the water you have been getting?
Build a insulated box on stilts separate from the house. Make sure it is well ventilated.
Worked for our carpet cleaner in a warehouse(the type they use in comercial carpet cleaning vans) is was deafening, it was in a corner of the warehouse and you needed hearing protection across the emprty foam insulated warehouse. We framed up 2 walls leaving the top open, used fiberglass insulation it was night and day, had we put a top on it and insulated, it would have been silent in the warehouse.

Just got most of them fixed from the last one. It ain't going to be pretty come morning when the upper watershed gets here, and it won't be any better today and tonight either, just from the local water. The memory of 2011's drought is fading fast. Current radar--system is moving diagonally from lower left to upper right.
Brenham Texas, about 90 miles sw of me got 21" yesterday and last night.

Let me know when you're ready to unload that place, I've got some ideas and more than willing to work out a buy here, pay here payment plan. What I don't know is where pay here is.
I like the insulated panel and old tire idea, might be effective.

I like the old tire and insulated panel idea, too. Or two old tires (deflated) with a sheet of MDF or plywood on top of them. The generator on top of that. Anything vertical, between the generator and the wall, will help to reflect the sound away from the house.

You dragged the boat up and tied it to the porch right? Or have you finished the Ark?
I am no longer on my place. One of the last vehicles they allowed on the road before they closed it was Jane & I. Couldn't get her car thru a deep washout in a low draw crossing so we parked it on a hill--It will either be there when we can get back in or not...Camped at my sister's place for the night--she has electricity and droning generator noise. (Different elec provider)
Many DIY "noise suppression enclosure" can make most generators to heat up and even overheat. Generator Heat is a big enemy will Reduce power made by them. Overheat the motor or generator will quickly kill them, often permanently.
You think small units are loud? Try 30,000Kw and bigger w/ Diesel Engines. Many buildings I worked in that them and even w/ huge mufflers, you can't hear anything but the gen set til you are 50-150 yards away.

Ah just forget about the noise after a week or so you won't even notice it, we did when we lost power for 2 weeks up here a couple of decades ago before I got ours. and I put the one we rented right on the porch next to our bedroom. I even missed the noise and it woke me up if it ran out of gas in the middle of the night.
or you could just splurge and let some of those moths out of that bank vault you call a wallet and spend 59 cents on a set of ear plugs,

put it on 4 H/F cheap air filled wheel/tires.. 3.99 on sale/coupon.. set air psi so thy look 1/3rd flat.. this will kill the vib's getting to the porch.. and make it easy to move.. then add a bigger muffler, and air filter inlet..
My 60 gallon compressor makes1000x less noise, with an automotive air filter box from a newer vehicle as it has a muffler in it.. and can run it all night with no one knowing...
once you put tires on it, and muffler on the exhaust. you'll hear the air being sucked in the engine.. so worry about that last..

Watched the Weather Channel last night, they were predicting more rain for your area. I didn't sleep well thinking about that. Checked it out this morning, it appears parts of SE Texas got a lot more rain last night. Hope all is well.
How close are you to Brenham, TX? Based on this morning's news report, there ain't much left there. ------------------ Ron

93 miles from here to Blue Bell plant's main gate.
Southeast Texas has been pounded with horrific weather lately, with two 500-year flood events in two months. "Basically, it's a 1-in-500 chance of it happening in any year," said CNN meteorologist Taylor Ward. "Happening twice in a single year is very bad luck."

Maybe you should buy a lottery ticket Don, if the weatherman is right you are beating the odds as far as weather goes this year. But then I don't hold much faith in the weatherman's predictions.
Dunno about that. Last month's flood was at 17.x ft. This morning, the downstream gage says 19.38'. We're already above what yesterday's projected crest was forecast to be. It's come up fully 2 feet vertically since we got out yesterday. Blue sky and sunshine overhead this morning tho. Time to go take a drive an look firsthand I guess.

If I was you I would be putting a snorkel on that dam truck of yours, driving threw water scares me, seen places where entire bridges have washed away up here. some parts of roads wash away and there is nothing under the water anymore. http://www.autoanything.com...akes/20A54545A1.aspx I have been lucky when driving on water covered roads, but I just don't like the idea of driving threw running water where I can't see the road under the water.

West Texas normally is hot as hell and normally dry, East Texas is still hot but, gets a lot of rain. Apparently, Don gets his fair share and then some............

Been an interesting day. Still no electricity, tho of the 17 customers on my side of the river, 3 have power and Entergy is at a loss as to why the rest of us don't. They were walking/wading the whole line right before dark to try to figure a plan for 1st thing tomorrow morning. I had to drive 45 miles round trip to buy gasoline today :bang: :bang:
Some pics: 1. Some moron in an Expedition tried to drive thru high water right in front of my place and went over the side. Got him out, and DPS arrested him for DUI. Not sure if this will work: http://vid1375.photobucket....0211_zpsvmumbyei.mp4
I drove the old Ford 3600 thru some not terribly deep water, accross my pond dam and took this panoramic shot of about 1/2 the place, looking back toward the house on the left and toward the highway on the right where the car got washed off the roadway. Click to show
Nearest paved county road to me, culvert washed completely out. (There's another way around thru a guy's yard so I could still get in and out) That's a county gradall boom and bucket on the right side of the pic--they're getting ready to pull the steel pipe out and replace it with a new poly pipe.
Water running around the West side of my pond dam.
Water is within 6" of topping the dam. Highest I have ever seen it since flood of record in 1994.
So far, my County still trusts in God. (San Jacinto County Precinct 3 Constable Sam Houston.
Is two months longer or shorter than 500 years? Google it if you need to.
Gosh, I assumed you knew.
