Today I purchased my HP Tuners software to be able to tune my car. Now, I don't know squat about tuning cars but my mechanic that lives in another state sure does. So, I am going to be downloading meta data from my car, send it to him to have him tweak it and then send it back where I will flash my computer.
I'm really stoked about seeing if we can make the process work. I'll keep you guys updated if you are interested.
Since I am going to have to record data while I drive (the screen will have to be up), I wonder what laws are involved with having an open laptop in the car. Anybody know the general rule of thumb?

If both of you are using HP Tuners and have the same version, you can send .hpt files to another user and they can be opened, edited and returned via email.

You dont need the laptop to record a run .Just hook up the interface to the OBD2 port , start the car up and press the record button on the interface .Drive as long as you want and then take it in your house and watch it .You will need to do a "read entire " before you can file anything AFAIK .Do not plug your laptop in to the battery charger or have any auxilliary loads running when you do any tuning or reading of the ECM .
I got my software Saturday and I installed it on my computer. I went to flash read my car's ECM and of course the software was unable to read it with a “detect protocol failed error”. Of course, HP Tuners doesn't offer any phone support or support on weekends and even then, only through e-mail so I get to wait until they decide to return my email. I expect a string of e-mails taking most the day to resolve the problem. Searches on their website return no solutions.
Their instructions include one sheet of paper with printing on one side. Instructions on the website don't match what my program looks like. Not much to go on.

You must be referring to the Pro level interface with direct wide-band inputs, or maybe the interfaces have been upgraded in the 4 years since I purchased mine. My regular interface does not have a record button and must be used with a laptop to scan/record data.
Yes , I did buy what was called the Pro MPVI interface at the time .It was I think an extra 100.00 but the features I feel were worth it .I would have to look at my thread to figure out how long I have had it . As far as getting your system to work , make sure you have it properly registered and follow the "read entire " instructions to the letter .If you do it all right it will ask you to spend 2 credits to perform the read entire and then you can tune .The HP tuners forum has solutions to all the problems everyone has encountered .The lack of phone service is definitely a minus but I can see why they just do email only .Most of the people using the system are beginners or amateur tuners like me and the phone calls would probably bankrupt them .
As I recall , I had to install some 3rd party software to get mine to initially work .A prompt came up on the screen to do this .Sorry I cant be more help , that is all I remember .
I thought I would bring you guys up to date on my HP Tuners program. I had to jump through a couple of hoops but it wasn't really that bad. They guys at HP returned e-mails pretty quickly and even called me during a flurry of emails back and forth.
My mechanic sent me a couple configuration files I loaded so both our computers look and act the same now. Later, I made a log file from a short run to town but the USB port came undone so that log was kind of a wash but later I added a couple of other runs and found I was going 110 at one point (wow). The temperature is between 160 and 190 so I think my engineair dam is working. Every once in a while, I can hear the rubber dam bottom out especially when I drive out of a driveway. No worries though--its rubber and none the worse for wear!
Anyway, I sent the logs to my mechanic and he is going to probably make some adjustments. It will be fun to see what changes!
Updating my tuning by proxy. After fixing a couple of ground problems and fixing a vacuum line I was able to get my tunes and feed them right into my ecm. It was pretty cool and pretty easy. Now, I have to admit I was expecting some big changes in performance but there weren't any. Just subtle changes to the fuel trims. No doubt there will be additional tunes. Just to give you an idea of the cost, I paid $500 for the HP tuners program, $100 for licences and $60 for the tune. Everything was done through e-mail. Setting up the program was pretty easy. At some point, I am going to add the Methanol/water rig and it will need a new tune at that point. Perhaps I will be able to do it myself by then maybe not. The program makes available a plethora of information most of which I doubt I can interpolate.
If you are tuning with HP Tuners, I assume that you have an engine swap. If the engine is stock then a simple removal of the VATS and DTC codes that are not used, is all you need. If you want to tune for more power, its difficult to say how much more you can squeeze out of an engine but the difference is not dramatic. The programs from the auto manufacturers are fairly well optimized and if you just start changing the timing and fuel care is required to avoid KR's. Your technique is correct: -scan-log-read-then adjust if needed-then scan again. If you have changed tire size then it is also important to use the tire size calculator to rescale the shift points and torque management.
