Change it, the cable. that's all I can think of. disconnect it from the engine and make sure all the connections move freely if the do then disconnect it from the pedal and make sure the pedal isn't sticking and try moving the cable by hand to make sure it is the cable, grab it with a pair of pliers or small needle nose vise grips and move it while disconnected.

I had to change the cable on my 85 2M4 for the same reason. Get the Fiero store cable, it's a good product. When installing there is a panel you can take off on the side of the heater box near the gas pedal that will allow you to reach the new cable and pull it thru and attach it to the gas pedal.

My 86 auto was always stiff. The spring in the transmission attached to the TV cable was strong. I lived with it till I upgraded to supercharged 3800 / 4t65e

Check to see if the throttle plate in throttle body has free movement.

Is it stiff always, or is it just stiff in the closed position? V6 or 4cyl?
If it's only stiff when closed, the throttle is probably sticking in the bore. If so, the throttle stop screw might be misadjusted. If the screw is exposed then it's been moved before. If you move it, remember how many turns you used so you can reverse the change.
If the adjustment screw has a seal over it then you should probably leave it alone. Sealed means it's still in factory position so it should already be correct.
I don't know if this adjustment exists on the 4cyl, I've only seen it on the V6.

If it's stiff all the way then this isn't the problem.

If you have floor mats, pull the one out on the drivers side only and see if the problem goes away. If it does then you found your problem.
No,,, removing the passenger mat wont make it any easier.
