Picked up a 3.1 stroker for a sweet deal, plan on putting a small turbo on it and want to run DIS. It's a later 2.8 block and has the blank for the CPS hole but it is not drilled. Can you drill it out and use a CPS for DIS? Is it a good idea/bad idea?

Hywel

Very hard to get the hole drilled properly for position unless using a line bore with drill adapter.(back to the machine shop) Also that engine most likely does not have the notches in the crankshaft for the sensor anyway. There have been in the past, timing cover adapters to use the Buick engine style DIS. It was based on the 3.0/3.3 bank injector firing.

Another angle would be to indent a harmonic balancer the same way the crankshaft is and build a mount for the sensor.
You need to degree mark the balancer. Then precisely cross cut the indents.
The problem with this is the common problem of balancers spinning on the rubber isolator and throwing your marks off. You would also have to make a cover to keep crap from building up on the sensor magnet.
The other option I was talking about involves taking a 3.0/3.3 trigger plate that bolts to the inner part of the balancer and the timing cover is machined to clear it and fit a crank sensor. It has been 20 years since I had seen it done.
