I am just about done building my 3800 sc series 2 to put into my 88 formula and I have a few questions on tuning:

I have the harness apart and will begin building it up. What is the best year pcm to use? The engine is from a 97 Park Ave ultra. I have heard some PCM's won't physically fit in the fiero console space.

I will be keeping the egr and boost bypass and have added a VS cam and powerlog manifiold. I would like to do the tune myself. I have many years electronic experience and all the necessary programmers, eproms, erasers etc.

Are there any bin files out there for tuner cat with this config for a starting point? And which year PCM would be best?

I know I could go to ZZP and get a PCM already programmed as well as the many other sources but I would like to do it myself.

EDIT: OK I did a little more searching and looks like I want to go with a 98 and up PCM. I will wire it to a 97 harness following gmtuners schematics. Still looking for the dumps to get started.

a 98PCM from a grand prix, and any wiring harness you wire correctly will work without programming save the check engine light being on.

Thanks for the reply. So this would have the correct programming for the VS cam? Does it have to be a GTP PCM or just a regular GP? Any ideas on where to get a dump? Thanks!

Has to be a gtp pcm for various reasons including the 2bar map.

I would recommend tuning for the vs cam to get the most out of your engine. Even stock cars get benefit from a good tune, never mind a modified swap. Also get familiar with KR

One more thing. Is your tuner cat a version that is set up for obd II tuning? I'm used to hearing it used for obd I .

You are probably right about that. i looked into HPTuners VCM, but it seems like a PITA with the credits and all. Is there a free OBD2 scan/programmer that anyone uses. I did a lot of research on KR,. ZZP had a good writeup about it in their tech section. I will probably go with a preprogrammed unit from ZZP, but I would like to get some hands on to better understand things.

Nothing that I know of. I used DHP Powertunr to get my feet wet. Its unlocked for pretty much all series 2 ecm year. You can get that for 200-250 shipped. However the company has gone under so there is zero support.

I have now added an hp tuners vcm pro to my tuning hardware/software. You can get a used one for 350-500 with some credits left if you act quickly when ones comes up. Its much more expensive but its still current and theres lots of support, havent had a chance to play much to get experience but the graphic tables seem really handy too.

Looks like HP Tuner along with Tiny Tuner will get me started, also found a load of bins here:

http://www.hptuners.com/for...&highlight=grand+bin

would still like to find one with the VS cam dialed in so I could RE it and help to better understand.

DHP software is available online, all you need is an AVT-841 cable(others may work, not sure). that with tiny tuner can do most of what you should need in the way of tuning for way less than HPT.

Found the DHP software, been looking around for the cable today. Would be nice to find specs to build one.

although it wouldn't be impossible, it wouldn't be practical.

oh, and FWIW, my AVT cable is an 838 and it works with the DHP also.

Yes I agree, seems much more than a cable. Looks like the only place I can get one is here:

Are any of these interfaces native usb or do I need a USB to serial adapter. I know sometimes that's flakey. I guess it doesn't matter which one I get, the 838 or 841?

neither are native USB that I am aware of. I'm pretty sure the 841 is just an updated 838 can't say 100% though.

I remember looking at those interfaces when my dhp went wonky. If I remember correctly one or them was a usb based interface that could work. Email the supplier, I think he knew and several ppl had bought them to use with dhp software.

aparently a 842 is usb and works with the DHP software.

http://60degreev6.com/forum...ad.php/50873-AVT-841

I think it's on the 4th page of that thread.

on mine, the computer side is a female 9 pin connector, and the obd port side is a male 15 pin connector
