curious from those who have done the 1988 oil pressure sender upgrade on pre 1987 2.8/3.4 motors, did it make any difference if it was located down low next to the oil filter or up on top where the stock sender was located? Factory service bulletin says to locate it near the filter.

IIRC if you put down by the oil filter, it might interfere with the A/C compressor.

apparently the service bulletin refers to installing a 45 degree fitting so it lays below the AC compressor. I'm going to be dropping the cradle so it should make it easier to tell if it will avoid the AC. wondering if it gives a better reading without the long tube? I'd probably rather keep it up top, but there must be a reason the factory wanted to locate it down by the filter.

Wasn't it down by the filter only on the non-AC cars?

I recently did an upgrade on my 86 and I found that it's subject to rainwater getting into the top, which could possibly cause a short. I did an install without cutting my original harness and put a cover over everything. I think a better way might be to put a 90 degree fitting in the tube and mounting the sender horizontally instead of vertically. Here's a link to what I did.

I'm still a noob so you should take this with a grain of salt, but I just recently did this upgrade on my A/C equipped GT. I used the 45 degree fittings so it lays horizontal underneath the A/C compressor. There is no belt on it currently and I had to swing it out of the way to give myself a little room to work, but it seems to me that it can swing back down pretty far without interfering with the sending unit. Again, my belt is not on so I don't know how close it is to the block when the belt is tight, but once the fittings and unit are in there it looked to me that there was enough room where nothing is going to interfere.

Edit: If you do it this way, make sure you get the right thread sealer and put plenty on the threads of the fittings. It's kind of a pain to get everything threaded in and lined up, it's worse to have to do it again because it was leaking. Learned that the hard way!

Hadn't seen this solution before, like the looks of it. thanks for posting it. Here's a picture of one mounted next to the filter for comparison.

That 45-degree elbow should take care of the A/C compressor interference. But what about the bracket for the shock absorber thingy?

I'm not sure if this will work, but how about using two elbow fittings to aim the sender in the opposite direction? Instead of pointing at the A/C compressor, it would lay across the top of the oil filter. I just can't remember off the top of my head how close the coolant crossover pipe is to the oil filter.
