Are talking about the switch the key goes in or the electric switch on the bottom of the column that has the electrical plugs in it?

the key one I don't think could be the problem, but the one the electrics plug in could be, do you feel the spring when you turn it to start? if not you may have it in the wrong position or a new defective switch, both are possible.

Just clicking in the engine compartment? Did you try boosting the car to see if it works, usually when a battery is almost dead you will hear clicking. Could be a bad connection at the starter. I would try boosting it first and go from there.

Let us know.

Check for power into and out of the gear selector switch on the transmission (auto) or clutch switch by the pedal (manual) with the key held in the "start" position. Don't have an 84 service manual so I'm not sure of the wire colors. The 86 wire colors are: Yellow wire is power from the ign switch and purple goes to the starter.

Does it crank fine when cold?
I had a BBC that would get heat soaked. Replaced starter and solenoid numerous times. Finally installed shield and never had another problem.

Above diagram Does Not apply to 84.
See my Cave, Alternator Sense for alt and starter wiring.

Check ignition switch adjustment and link between switch and lock.

man trans check clutch switch
auto trans check neutral safety switch
