After three months of kvetching, this rank amateur finally dived in and did it. Fortunately, the engine stayed in place; no crowbar necessary. The new dogbone with rubber bushings ($12 on Amazon) bolted right in.

The "clunk" I would hear every time I accelerated disappeared. It's ready for another 165,000 miles.

'84 Sport Coupe, Iron Duke, 4-speed manual, red, gray interior, alloy wheels, original owner since April of '84.

Sadly no...
Because you very likely have bad trans/engine mounts and new version of dogbone is weaker then old version.
See my Cave, Torque Strut. This is written for later years but bad trans mounts can eat Dogbones.

Like need cradle bushings too at minimum.

prevents him from having the same problem in a few months.
Like many, He's treating a symptom. Worse a new style DB that will fail and/or break other parts.
