I am in the middle of swapping in a 3800II and F23 5 speed into our 87 gt race car.

I bought Roger Thelin's kit for this tranny and have no freaking clue how to get it to work. His shifter shaft is too large in diameter and won't even go in. His response is to polish the shaft to get it to fit.
There is another issue with the tranny cover not working the way he thinks it does.

My question is: Has anybody had cables made to work with the stock setup on the F23?

I need a source and sizing ASAP as we have a race coming up and I don't have a shifter.

You may have noticed that Roger's kit is for use with an Ecotec swap... I am not sure what you mean by tranny cover, but if you are referring to the bell-housing, then you are correct, his front transmission mount bracket will not bolt to the Metric FWD bell from the Cavi/Sunfire. You need to make a front bracket that will work with the Metric bell-housing. His rear mount bracket fits like a glove, if you have an 88 Fiero.

I don't know of anyone, personally, who has used his transmission side shifter assembly... I wish I could point you somewhere for that. The majority of folks on the forum that have done the swap used the method, or something similar, to the one found in the The Getrag F23 Tutorial which you can get the custom length cables for from California Push Pull... and some have done one off custom deals of their own design, and stock length Fiero cables.

Not the bellhousing. I have that worked out.

On Roger's kit you have to rotate the plate that the shifting rod going in to the trans is in. It also has the tower that the linkage is mounted to.
It needs to rotate on the tranny and that doesn't work on mine.

When it is all said and done Roger says you still need to buy a cable to get this to work.

I would just as soon buy two cables and forget his kit if it is not right anyway.

I called California push pull and they have no idea what I need. He said tell them what I want and they will make.

I need to know what someone used and possibly if they have an invoice or order number I could source it from them.

I am not worried about looks as this is strictly a racecar. If I use the trans in exactly stock condition it would be easier in the long run anyway for replacements

Using two Fiero Getrag select cables you can do this by making up shifter brackets at the tranny end and modifying the 5 speed shifter to work with two select cables. Done this quite a few times now and it works quite well. Dan

here are a couple pics of the work FIEROFLYER did for me. The first pic is of the shifter he modified for me to work with 2 select cables.

The next pic is of the shifter bracket he made for me.

I spoke with Rodney Dickman today and he is concerned that a select cable might not hold up to shifting, especially in a race car.

You haven't had any problems?

I also spoke with Roger Thelin and we have concluded that the pre 2006 F23 is different than what he worked on and his kit does not work

The plate that bolts to the tranny on mine is different and will not allow for the rotation of the plate to accomodate his 90 degree rotation
