I'm looking at this cam- http://www.jegs.com/i/Comp-...49/08-420-8/10002/-1

I know it will vary some from block to block, but what's the experience here with the rods getting close to the cam? I'll be running 400 rods with 350 pistons.

I could get a small circle cam, but I got a chance at a really good deal on this one from a local guy and it completely fits my requirements.

Cant help you much John, since my 383 was built for me. I never saw the inside. Cant you buy some aftermarket rods that have more clearance ? Maybe have yours machined and balanced ?

You can't really do anything with the rods as far as interference with the cam. You can go with a cam that has a smaller diameter circle size, which is what I'm trying to find out if I'm going to have to do. It's not always an issue, I'm trying to get a consensus as I don't have my block yet. BTW, if anyone has a 350 roller block to sell, I'm looking.

Yes there will be cam interference. What seems to be the fix is to machine down part of the rod bolt. You could use H-beam rods and you would just have to clearance the rod instead of the bolt.

I may have just been lucky in the past not having clearance issues but isn't the 350 cam height the same as the 400? The only difference I see is the 350 bore is smaller. I have had several 400's with stock rods and roller cams. The first had a small base circle cam. It was replaced with another roller cam with a normal base circle. The lobe centers were 110 or 112 - can't remember exactly - but the rod bolt didn't hit the cam in either case. It was close but didn't hit. Competition products has cap screw rods already clearance. The are good quality and not to expensive. You can always mock up the motor with what you have and carefully turn it over, by hand, while looking at the cam and rods clearance. The cam you like looks pretty mild and may be just fine. For a mock up I just put the pistons on the rods and put them in with no rings. It's easy to turn it over and do your checking. If you have to do some minor clearancing on the rod bolt heads, do it then. I'm running a sbc Dart block. Cam location is stock GM location and height. I have a 4 inch stroke and 6 inch rods. I have a longer stroke, rod length and more cam lift than the one you are building. The cam is a roller with a full base circle. The rods are Howards cap screw rods. No cam clearance issues at all.

even WITH the rod bolts ground down, you may have problems, I did 1 time. it depends on the lobe center that the cam is ground at(as I remember). there is a special BOOK out on building stroker small blocks, found it very helpful. small lobe cam, yes, but then your geometry changes because the lifters are lower in the hole.

I'm not a fan of grinding.
I did an LT1 383 in my 1996 Impala SS. I switched to H beam rods and there was no need for grinding and it solved the clearance issue.
