Want to know what it is like it living in and around Fort Myers, Florida. Crime rate, employment rate, areas in and around to live, things to do, and anything else anyone has to add in. Thanks in advance.

Recently bought a place with my family in Ft. Myers.

It's more of a vacation residence, but it seems nice to me. We did the gated community thing, so we're kind of isolated, but the weather sure as heck beats Canada.

Felt safe there etc.

I used to visit the area a lot on business, and I liked it pretty well.
Nice zoo, a couple of good Greek restaurants, and since Prick Scott moved up to Tallahassee, the crime rate has gone down and the air smells better.
Yup, Ft Myers/Naples is a pretty good place to be IMO.

i live in Cape coma as we like to call it, but i work in ft.myers and like any place there is good areas and bad. if you like to fish it a is paradise. as for work it can be good if you have any skills. if you are in the hospitality field it can be great but it is seasonal, if you save aqay your money during the busy times you can make a decent living. rents can be a little pricey in the good areas. there is things to do but some people will say there is nothing it depends on what you like to do. there is A LOT of out doorsy things to do. there is a few of us fiero nuts around ft. myers.

I live 20 miles from Ft Myers , in Punta Gorda , which is next to Port Charlotte, which is next to North Port,..... etc.

Weather is great, aside from the Monster "Charley" storms. Crime rate, as with any large city, is higher in the city than the close by towns.

When I moved from the Washington DC area, Maryland, the pace of life was less hectic here. Felt like 10 years back in time. I enjoy living here.

Greek food nearby..

Kabob Aroma 13220 N. Clevland Ave, Ft Myers

OPA Mediterranean Gourmet 2950 Winkler Ave, Ft Myers

Nomiki's Plakka Greek Restaurant 12901 Mcgregor Blvd, Ft Myers

Nelly's Taste of Greece 290 Nicholas Pkwy, Cape Coral

Athens Grecian Delight 1441 Tamiami Trail, Port Charlotte

Olympia Restaurant 3245 S. Tamiami Trail, Port Charlotte

Elena's Restaurant 615 Cross Street (which is Tamiami Trail), Punta Gorda

Greek Grille , 14828 Tamiami Trail, North Port

Yeah... the most important one..

NO STATE INCOME TAX

Take a look at your last paycheck... look at that line that says state income tax withheld. Now... pretend like that line never existed, and that amount of money simply went back into your net pay.

That's Florida at it's finest. Just sayin'...

EDIT: to add... everyone always says "Oh, Florida makes up their money elsewhere from you in other fees" and I'm here to say... no... no they don't. Florida does NOT tax the individual earner in any other way, and their fees in everything else are still far below the other states. To register your car... no silly safety inspection or emissions inspection. It's like ~$50 a year for a standard sedan. Car insurance is a little high, but mostly in the South Florida area. Gas is generally cheaper than other states, and the sales tax in most places is the same as it is in other cities. Cost of living is cheaper too. I honestly can't think of anything bad about Florida other than the fact that people in South Florida are generally nasty to eachother... but that's kind of part of it's charm, and you get used to it.

My parents have a place there. They love it, I like it. Not many jobs, mostly retirees. The housing market really took a hit so you can find some good deals. There are some sketchy / rough areas, but no real reason go to them. Getting the heck out of IL would be a good reason to move. If you are serious, my parents were in realestate and still have some friends in the business there, PM me and I can give you their contact info.

EDIT: the only negative for me is I have been 3 cars shows in Ft. Myers in the last two years and not seen one Fiero. In fact I have never seen a Fiero in Ft Myers period.

Yeah, I know there are a few of you down there. Maybe next year when I come down I will look you up. To be fair most of my time when in Ft Myers is spent in a gated 55+ community, so not exactly the Fiero crowd. The car shows I have gone to have been put on by the local Mustang club and the local Corvette club. If my parents had a better garage situation I would buy my Dad a Fiero so I would have one to drive when I come down there.
