Yes, I remember when "Aja" came out. Not a big departure for Becker & Fagan, but I was a Dan Fan for years before that. I looked at it more as an extension in a new direction.
Smoking Mother Nature's and listening to 'Cheech & Chong' or 'Firesign Theater'? '73-'76. 'Dave ain't here' was a favorite, since that is my name, and usualy my condition at the time.

Emerson, Lake, & Palmer? The Moody Blues? Cosby, Stills, & Nash? Jefferson Airplane? The Grateful Dead?
Was what I listened to in 73 the year i got kicked out of high school for busting the vise principal’s nose. Plus Hendrix at 10, meaning all the way up at 10 PM. My first acid trip, Talk about an awakening, trees grew before my eyes to the beat of the music.

In 1977 I was 22 and yes I remember just sitting around and listening to music like Steely Dan, Aja and The Dead. I still have a large collection of vinyl to convert over to digital to put on the iPod so I can still listen to it.
I remember listening to Emerson, Lake, & Palmer, The Moody Blues, Cosby, Stills, & Nash, too, but this album was different for me. It was just about as close to jazz (at the time) to my ear as I had ever been. Or maybe it was just the coke.
The whole scene seemed very intellectual to someone fresh out of the woods.
Best...album...EVER. And I always listen to it sober.
FYI, I came across a 24bit/96khz recording of some special vinyl re-release made by an audiophile who probably has a $50,000 stereo system. Let me know if anyone is interested in a link. You would download it, and burn it as a DVD-Audio.

I listened to and enjoyed nearly everything that people have listed here, but I never could develop a liking for Steely Dan, as much as I tried. I find that all of their music sounds the same to me. (To be fair, my wife says the same thing about Chicago, who I really like.)
Never developed a taste for the Dead, either, until later on. Just wasn't exposed to them that much.

A lot of great bands listed here ! I'll make you guys feel a little younger, as my most "blasted times" were 70-71, and the tunes in that period that were great are just too many to list.
Ironic that those times would have me one of the most deadly vessels in the world at the time, and working in an environment considered to be one of the most hazardous work places (flight deck of aircraft carrier) to work. Needless to say we picked our moments to get "blasted", and no incident aboard was ever attributed to alcohol/or drugs. While not listening to the latest releases on very fine stereo equipment we had on board, we also has our own band in the aviation fuels division, which I was a part of. Thanks for the memories !!!
typo's fixed.

I expected as much. People who like Steely Dan seem to be very unwavering in their disapproval and disdain for my opinion. You were actually much more polite than my other friends who are fans. (Their comments are not repeateable in polite company.)

Who is this Steely Dan you speak of? There is music and then there is noise, I'll leave it at that.

1977, huh? Time to make some of you feel old... I wasn't born until 1983. All of the good stuff I got as sloppy seconds at best. I kinda wish I had been born at a time when I could have listened to those artists live when they were in their prime.
Someday you'll look back with fondness....at Justin Bieber.
Absolutely not! I cannot say that I am fond of my generation's music. As much as I listen to the music from the late 80's to the early 90's, primarily because that's what I grew up on, I still like the Big Band and Swing era music the best.

My favs from the 70's was Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, Kiss, ACDC and ZZ TOP. Sorry but Steely Dan was just plain Gay to us. I like to remind my wife my lunch box is older than her. It was made in 1978 and still works great.
